Dear Parents, Students & Friends,

Welcome back to Term Three! Traditionally in schools Term Three has been known as the quieter term, however looking ahead to what we have on this term, it is anything but quiet. This term we have Year 3 & Year 4 Camp, Year 6 Confirmation, 100 days of Prep, Book Week, Grandparents’ Day celebrations, the Grade 6 production, our school review and much, much more! With that in mind, I ask that you please read through this week’s newsletter carefully so that you are aware of the upcoming dates for the duration of this term.

Video Production Day

Yesterday we had the staff from SHON productions onsite working with us to create mini videos of our school. The production team (who work in a lot of schools) were very impressed with the students' sense of school pride and how willing they were to share what makes Resurrection great! Look out for these videos, they will be on our website very soon!

Parent Teacher Learning Conversations

Next week you have the opportunity to engage in Parents Teacher learning conversations, Mr Hein has written about the importance of the conversations with your child’s teacher. These conversations work alongside the school report. I encourage you to also bring your child along to the interview so that they can be a part of the conversation.

Canteen update

I am very pleased to share that we are in the process of finalising a contract with Jude Fina Foods to run our school canteen.  More information regarding this will come in the following weeks. The canteen committee is very hopeful that by Term 4 we will have a school canteen operational!

Grandparents’ Day Celebrations

Preparations are well underway for our annual Grandparents’ Day celebrations. This is a wonderful morning where we welcome our grandparents with a with Mass followed by classroom visits and the opportunity for us to thank our grandparents for all that they do for us. Parents, please respond to the Operoo form which was sent out earlier this week.

Staffing update

I ask that you please keep Sensi Aiki and her family in your prayers. Yumiko’s father sadly passed away over the holidays and she has travelled back to Japan to attend his funeral.

This term we welcome back Mrs Angelina Turon who is returning for maternity leave. Angelina will be working on a Tuesday and Wednesday in a Literacy support and release role. Mrs Rosie Hogan is also returning after a term’s long service leave where she and her husband travelled overseas.  Welcome back to both Angelina and Rosie, it is wonderful to have you both back on site working with our students.

Finally, I am very happy to share that Mrs Sophie Duddington (Grade 3B) is pregnant and will commence maternity leave towards the end of Term 4.

With warmest regards,

Jess Davis

Book Week - are you ready?

Book Week and Book Parade are fast approaching. Have a read below to see what is happening to prepare for Book Week and what to do for Monday 3st July.

This week each child received a colouring in competition, spot the item and ‘create a

masterpiece’. Please return these to school with your child’s name and class in order for

them to go into the competition to win some amazing prizes.

Next week, students will receive a writing competition form. All students have to do is

write one sentence - this is not a big task, but being creative and making a powerful

sentence is a bit trickier. It is encouraged that children write the sentences themselves,

rather than receiving help from parents. Prizes will be awarded to the best sentences across

the school.

In Week 3, we will send home a match the staff member to their favourite picture

storybook. It will be a test to see how well you think you know these staff and their reading

habits. It may be a good idea to chat to some staff members on yard duty and see if you can get any clues form them to help you out!

Then comes Week 4: our Book Parade! On Monday 31st July children can come to school dressed as their favourite book characters. Every year we see witches, wizards, students from Hogwarts, Dr Suess characters, super heroes and many more. We love to see creativity and uniqueness. There is no need to purchase outfits or hire costumes, see what you have at home and put something together that brings your character to life.

The day will also have many other activities to keep the students in the festive mood. It

promises to be another great year of activities about books and reading!

To make it all simpler:

Who: All the students and staff (and parents, siblings, grandparents, carers, etc!)

What: Get dressed up as a book character or book related character

When: Monday 31st July, beginning at 9:00am

Where: It will either be in the courtyard or hall (weather dependant)

Why: We love books and reading!

In reading,

Mr Grant Lewis

Crossing Supervisors Needed

Brimbank City Council is currently recruiting for Casual Relief School Crossing Supervisors.

They are looking for mature aged people that would be interested in becoming a school crossing supervisor, supplement their income and be part of a great community providing a valued service. Please spread the word to extended family and friends.

Anyone interested, can apply on-line by submitting an application via the Brimbank City Councils website, (Current Vacancies), or via the link below:

https://brimbank.pulsesoftware.com/Pulse/UI/RCM/Jobs.aspx

Art Donation

For Visual Arts this semester, we are looking at reducing waste and the best way to accomplish this is by reusing and repurposing resources. This semester we are kindly asking for donations of small plastic reusable soft drink bottles. The 250-300ml size bottles are ideal, but we are welcoming all small bottles. Please ensure that the bottle has been emptied and rinsed before depositing it in the art donations wheelie bin.

A blue and clearly labelled wheelie bin will be placed outside the art room for drop off. The wheelie bin will also contain a picture of that month’s resource. If you see Mr Mo, whilst dropping off resources, please give him a friendly thumbs up. Thank you for your support.

Book Fair Bonanza!

One of the best gifts any parent can give a child is the love of books and the joy and benefits of independent reading for fun!

Resurrection Primary School will be taking part in the Scholastic Book Fair in Week 4 of Term 3, beginning August 1st through to August 4th as part of our Book Week celebrations.

A display will be set up in the Prep learning space with students being given the opportunity to view these books with their class during designated times throughout the week. Students will receive a ‘Wish List’ piece of paper which can be used to write down all of their favourite books from the stall. A wide variety of books will be available for purchase with books starting from as little as $5.

To make purchasing as easy as possible for parents / guardians, the book fair stall will be open from 8:15 - 9:30 am and from 2:30 - 3:15 pm August 1st through to August 4th.

Payment can be made via the EFTPOS machine or alternatively cash payments can also be made onsite.

Please note - students will not be able to make purchases at the Book Fair during the school day.

We look forward to what will be an amazing week celebrating the love of learning through books!

Enhancing & Celebrating

Our School Community

Daniel Y in Grade 5 and his team from St Albans Tennis Club made it to their first ever finals round and won the NSJTA competition last season! They competed at various clubs for 15 weeks playing both doubles and singles matches.

Daniel then also entered into the DHA Winter Cup and after three days of Daniel utilising technique and grit in his six singles matches, he won 6-4 to claim his first victory in a tennis tournament.

Daniel is now excited to start another season of the NSJTA competition this Saturday moving up to B Grade with a new team.

Daniel is also representing Melbourne on July 22nd with his hip hop dance crew, KStar, after achieving 2nd place in the Australian Dance Crew Championships qualifiers held at the Moonee Ponds Clocktower Theatre back on June 4th.

Daniel and his cousins can’t wait to fly to Sydney and compete at UNSW as they have been hard at rehearsals developing their latest routine and learning about stage presence and the foundations of dance.

It’s all about the teamwork and these kids are having a blast!

A huge thankyou to Daniel for letting us know about his recent tennis and hip-hop achievements! Please remember to let us know about any accomplishments your child may have as we would love to include it in the newsletter.

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (13:1-23)

A sower went out to sow.

Jesus left the house and sat by the lakeside, but such crowds gathered round him that he got into a boat and sat there. The people all stood on the beach, and he told them many things in parables.

He said, ‘Imagine a sower going out to sow. As he sowed, some seeds fell on the edge of the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Others fell on patches of rock where they found little soil and sprang up straight away, because there was no depth of earth; but as soon as the sun came up they were scorched and, not having any roots, they withered away. Others fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Others fell on rich soil and produced their crop, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Listen, anyone who has ears!’

Then the disciples went up to him and asked, ‘Why do you talk to them in parables?’ ‘Because’ he replied ‘the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven are revealed to you, but they are not revealed to them. For anyone who has will be given more, and he will have more than enough; but from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing and listen without hearing or understanding. So in their case this prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled:

You will listen and listen again, but not understand, see and see again, but not perceive.

For the heart of this nation has grown coarse, their ears are dull of hearing,

and they have shut their eyes, for fear they should see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their heart, and be converted and be healed by me.

‘But happy are your eyes because they see, your ears because they hear! I tell you solemnly, many prophets and holy men longed to see what you see, and never saw it; to hear what you hear, and never heard it.

‘You, therefore, are to hear the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom without understanding, the evil one comes and carries off what was sown in his heart: this is the man who received the seed on the edge of the path. The one who received it on patches of rock is the man who hears the word and welcomes it at once with joy. But he has no root in him, he does not last; let some trial come, or some persecution on account of the word, and he falls away at once. The one who received the seed in thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this world and the lure of riches choke the word and so he produces nothing. And the one who received the seed in rich soil is the man who hears the word and understands it; he is the one who yields a harvest and produces now a hundredfold, now sixty, now thirty.’

Gospel Reflection

The teaching of Jesus is grounded firmly in the Jewish world of the 1st Century. For most of his listeners, that world was an agricultural one and so the stories Jesus told were about the everyday realities of peoples’ lives. He told stories about vineyards, wheat fields, building houses, planting seeds and reaping harvests. The imagery he used was drawn from the lived experience of those he taught. Jesus used a style of storytelling that was popular at the time: parable. A parable is a story with a moral or a lesson. A parable usually involves an extended metaphor and, at its heart, is teaching the listener about how to live or how to behave.

Another feature of parables is that they can be understood at different levels. At one level, there is the literal meaning of a parable – what it says is what it is about. In today’s gospel, the parable of the sower can be read or heard as a literal story about sowing seed and the lesson one might take from it is to be careful where you throw the seed when sowing. At another level, parables have a metaphoric meaning. In this instance, Jesus actually explains the symbolism of the parable to his disciples. There is a further, interpretive level of a parable where a modern reader asks, ‘What has that story got to say to me here and now?’

In his conversation with the disciples, Jesus makes clear that only some people are open to understanding the depth of the message contained within his parables. Some people will only ever hear the story and never hear the message. Mind you, he still has to explain the parable to the disciples! He has just chastised those who fail to understand and yet walks the disciples through the parable step by step!

Historical Context – Matthew’s community

The gospel of Matthew is written at a time and particular context in which the community audience were feeling the effects of having been ostracised from the Jewish community. They were confounded by the fact that other Jews could not accept the reality of the Jesus message as they had. This parable, and the accompanying conversation with the disciples in which they are blessed for their understanding, would have been a comfort for the Matthew community. Although they were frustrated, they were being told through this story that not everyone is ready to hear the message that they had heard and accepted.

Scriptural context – A Parable Chapter

The gospel of Matthew is nothing if not a well-crafted and highly structured piece of writing. Throughout the gospel there are five major ‘discourses’ or teachings. Chapter 13, which consists entirely of a collection of parables, is the central discourse of the five. It is the pivotal point of the entire gospel. The nature of the parables indicates that the message of Jesus has not been universally accepted and the parables present metaphors about the consequences for those who do and do not accept the message of Jesus about the reign of God.

Living the Gospel – Scatter that seed!

The teaching of the parable of the sower is as true for us today as it was in its original context. The word of the kingdom continues to fall on people who are at various stages of readiness to receive it. What Jesus suggests to his disciples – and to us – is that the ‘good soil’ can’t always be predicted. Jesus doesn’t tell his disciples to only sow the word in people who are receptive. Rather, he wants them – and us – to scatter the word everywhere and to rejoice when it does find good soil and yields a rich harvest.
