Performing Arts
The Performing Arts program is a vibrant part of our school with an emphasis on music and drama education. Through music-making experiences we aim to nurture in children an enjoyment and understanding of the Performing Arts (Music/ Dance/ Drama) which will enrich the quality and creativity of their lives. Music is also an important part of our liturgical celebrations within the school community. In developing a cohesive and progressive music program, students are given opportunities to acquire musical knowledge (beat, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, expression, tone colour, style, form, theory, history) through musical experiences (singing, moving, dancing, playing instruments, listening, creating) both as individual musicians and in group music-making activities. As part of the Performing Arts program, students have the opportunity to learn to play a variety of percussion instruments including xylophones, metallophones, glockenspiels, drums, maracas, cabasas, tambourines, tone blocks, claves, bells, castanets. Students also learn to play the ukulele and recorder from Grades 3-6 during music lessons. Liturgical singing and movement is also a part of the school’s Performing Arts program, with students learning songs that are used for school masses and liturgical celebrations throughout the year. Our annual Grade 6 production combines singing, dancing and acting skills, developing students’ abilities to a high level in a full scale musical theatre production including costumes, stage make-up, scenery and props. Our school has two upright pianos housed in undercover areas in the central courtyard. The sound of piano music can be heard throughout the playground before school and during break times as students freely express and explore their musical skills and talents, often collaborating with fellow student musicians!
Visual Arts
The Visual Arts program at Resurrection Primary school is designed to encourage and challenge students to achieve their artistic potential in an enjoyable and supportive environment. Our aim is to deliver an exciting and engaging program which provides students with an opportunity to portray their thoughts, feelings and perceptions through many different media. Students are given the opportunity to develop their imagination and creativity by experimenting with materials, tools and techniques. Throughout their time at Resurrection, students will engage in many different learning opportunities and experiment with different art mediums such as painting, collage, clay, drawing, construction and textiles. They will also explore different artists and respond to rtworks by well known artists. Through their exploration of artworks, students will unpack and experiment with the elements and principles of art: Art elements- colour and value, line, shape (2D), texture, space and form (3D). Art principles- contrast, repetition and pattern, emphasis, balance, movement and rhythm and unity. All students will attend a 1 hour session of Visual Art per week. The Visual Arts classroom at Resurrection is a spacious and well equipped classroom where everyone can work together to foster, unpack and discover the inner artist within every child. Foundation to Grade 2: In the first years of school, the emphasis is on experimenting with a wide variety of materials and techniques to create and showcase students’ individual artistic expression. Children are able to share their work with their classmates and are encouraged to talk about techniques and materials used to create their pieces. Grades 3 to 6: As children move through the school, there is an increased focus on developing their skills and techniques to help them communicate their feelings and thoughts through a wide variety of art forms. Students are encouraged to explore and discuss famous artworks as well as those of their peers. Art is valued across the school day and isn’t just limited to the formal hour; students will use what is learnt in the Art Room to enhance their learning in the classroom, as well as have the opportunity to join the drawing club during recess. Students have the opportunity to use their art to create our annual/bi-annual Art Show logo via our art logo competition.
STEM
STEM is a relatively new specialist subject offered at Resurrection. STEM stands for (Science, Technologies, Engineering and Mathematics) and strives to provide opportunities for students to develop specific knowledge, understandings and skills in each of these learning areas, as well as the interrelationship between each of them. At its core, STEM provides students with hands-on experiences to help develop knowledge and skills for them to discover and understand more about the world around them. At Resurrection, we pride ourselves on our hands-on approach to earning! All students from P- 6 attend a 1 hour session of STEM per week in a dedicated STEM room equipped with a range of learning resources such as: Science kits, construction zone, Bee-Bots, traditional Lego blocks, Robotic Lego kits, Ipads, Micro-bits, green screen equipment, 24 ipads and a ratio of 1-1 chromebooks for each child. During STEM, students engage in the design process based on authentic and engaging situations. They are encouraged to define, investigate, design, construct and test their solutions and reflect on how their product meets the needs of their user. Grade 5 and 6 students are involved in the STEM Aviation program where students investigate, design, build and fly a model prototype aircraft. Our students are also provided the opportunity to compete in STEM MAD, an annual expo run by MACS (Melbourne Archdiocese of Catholic Schools). Resurrection is excited that the STEM program can help foster, develop and mold the future generations of scientists, mathematicians and engineers.
LOTE- JAPANESE
At Resurrection Primary School, all students from Prep to Grade 6 learn Japanese. The focus is not on creating fluent speakers of Japanese; rather, the aim is to equip our students to feel comfortable and confident with another language and to be familiar with the culture of Japan. This is done through the use of games, songs and stories. Curriculum content is related to the Inquiry Units covered by the classroom teacher and links across curricula are made wherever appropriate. As the children progress through the school, their skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Japanese are developed. The Hiragana phonetic script is introduced at Prep and is developed as students advance through their years at school. In Grades 5 and 6 there is a more concentrated focus on reading and writing in Hiragana, which is an extension of the new Victorian Curriculum Foundation - 10, and is highly beneficial to students as they prepare for the Secondary School stage of their education. Where possible, opportunities are provided for Japanese native speakers to visit and spend time in classes with the children. This benefits the children enormously in terms of experiencing authentic Japanese culture first hand and creating empathy and cultural connections. Grades 1-6 students also have the opportunity of communicating with students in Japan via Zoom. Zoom exchanges with school students in Japan are scheduled at least once a year at the moment. Resurrection Primary School established a formal “sister school” relationship with the Tsutsujigaoka Primary School in Japan in 2022. The school is in Nabari, a city of about 80,000, located in the central Mie Prefecture on Honshu Island, the largest and most populous island of Japan. A famous product of the Mie Prefecture is Akafuku, a wholesome sweet made with mochi and sweet red bean paste. Yummy! The children of the Tsutsujigaoka school enjoy extending their outreach activities to the children of Resurrection Primary School. They, and the Resurrection school community, will benefit significantly as the sister school relationship develops every year.
Physical Education
At Resurrection Catholic Primary School, we’re dedicated to ensuring that every child feels valued and included in our curriculum. Our P.E. program is intentionally varied to ensure that each student experiences enjoyment and finds success, making their physical education journey a positive and enriching experience. Through innovative activities, expert instruction, and a focus on personalised progress, our curriculum empowers students to discover the joy of movement while developing essential motor skills, coordination, and sportsmanship. Tailored for students of all levels and interests, our program is more than just exercise. It is also designed to ignite a passion for movement while nurturing teamwork, resilience, and personal achievement. Throughout the year, our senior students engage in interschool sports and district sporting events, which gives our students an opportunity to not only excel athletically but also to foster camaraderie and team spirit as they represent Resurrection Catholic Primary School. The junior students participate in an intensive two-week swimming program designed to instill water safety skills and confidence in the pool. Under the guidance of certified instructors, students dive into a comprehensive curriculum that emphasises swimming techniques, water awareness, and personal achievement. As a school community, we come together for our annual athletics carnival, a spirited event that celebrates participation, teamwork, and healthy competition. From sprinting to long jump, students of all ages showcase their talents and sportsmanship in a fun-filled day of track and field events.
