Dear Parents, Students & Friends,
The time of Advent is upon us. Advent is the four week period of preparation for the season of Christmas. Advent begins the cycle of the Liturgical Year and focuses on the coming of the Lord. The first weeks offer a vision of the future, looking to the end of time when Christ will come again. The final weeks point more specifically to the birth of Christ. Christ, the promised one, is awaited with joyful expectation. The First Sunday of Advent follows the final Sunday of Ordinary Time and the season concludes on Christmas Eve.
The themes for advent are preparation, waiting, anticipation and joy each of which our students have begun to explore in class. You will notice that the liturgical colour through the church and school has now changed to purple.
Grant Lewis - A published author!
As most of you are aware, Mr Grant Lewis works with our staff as an external Learning and Teaching Consultant. He supports teachers to plan rich, engaging learning experiences based around the needs of our students based on data. In his spare time, he has been very busy writing a book! I am pleased to share that this book launched earlier this week. The book is called Curating Inquiries: Curriculum design and mapping for primary schools.
“In Curating Inquiries, Grant Lewis shares his knowledge of curriculum design and inquiry learning garnered from over 20 years of experience. This book will explore how schools and teachers can develop a conceptual framework that scaffolds the learning journey while developing inquiries worth learning about.
What a wonderful achievement, congratulations Grant!
Resurrection Family Christmas Carols
We are very hopeful that the weather will cooperate and this year's carols will be able to proceed as planned. Much planning and preparation has already gone into the carols and it will be, I'm sure, a wonderful way for our community to gather and celebrate the season of Advent, waiting in anticipation for the birth of Christ. If the carols are going to be cancelled due to extreme weather, a decision will be made at 3.00pm on Monday 4th of December. Please find more information pertaining to the carols further on in this newsletter.
Resurrection St Vinnies Christmas Appeal
A huge thank you to the families who have donated non-perishable items to our St Vinnies appeal. Just a reminder that families are invited to the Resurrection Parish Mass this Sunday 3rd of December at 10.30am to present these items to the Resurrection St Vinnies members.
2024 Transition & Staffing
Earlier this week, our students began the journey of transition into their new class for 2024. I would like to express my gratitude to the many parents who have taken the time to share valuable insights and feedback via email, which greatly assisted in placing their child in the appropriate class for next year.
To gain a deeper understanding of our student placement processes, procedures, and rationale, I kindly request that you take a moment to review the school's Child Classroom Placement & Procedures Policy, which can be found further in this newsletter.
Further in the newsletter you will find the names of the teachers and staff assigned to next year's classrooms. Additionally, I have included helpful strategies for parents to support their child's social development, adaptability to change, resilience, and the formation of new social connections. Our transition days are designed to foster a sense of belonging for students, allowing them to become acquainted with both their new teacher and fellow classmates for the upcoming year. These days also provide an opportunity to familiarise themselves with the learning environment they will be immersed in.
Transition, which can be best described as a process of acclimating to change, offers immense potential for personal, emotional, and social growth for your child. It is something we should embrace rather than fear as change can be a very positive experience.
To assist you further, we have compiled a few tips for parents in supporting their child's smooth transition from one classroom to the next.
God Bless,
Jess Davis
Acting Principal
CHANGE - A Positive Experience
1. Encourage Self-Advocacy.
Self-advocacy is one of the most important skills your child will learn over the next few years. Speaking up for himself or herself and knowing how to ask for what they need is a critical, lifelong skill. Your child can only learn it if you make an intentional effort to back away and let him or her have this opportunity.
Help your child brainstorm what to say, and maybe even write the email or plan a conversation together, but let the message come from your child.
When your child feels like another student wronged him or her, teach them to use their teacher as a resource. Help your child report the incident to the teacher or even myself as acting principal, but let him or her take the lead.
Please note that with these examples, I encourage parents to follow up with teachers to make sure your child really did follow through and advocate for themselves.
2. Allow Your Child To Struggle.
This one is always hard and something as a parent, I also struggle with! We don’t like to see our children struggle, our instinct is to jump in and rescue. However, we all know that the greatest lessons in life come from learning from our mistakes, and if our goal is to raise children to become strong, independent adults, we need to learn to let them stumble.
The most important thing parents can do to support their child at this age is learn to ask, “How can I help? What kind of support do you need?” instead of thinking “How can I fix this for you?”
Our kids take their lead from our energy as parents. The attitude you project will be the attitude they absorb. Allow your child to suffer the “natural consequences” of being unprepared. Maybe he or she will get in trouble. Maybe your child will receive feedback that they don’t want to hear. It will be challenging and your child will be upset, but hopefully habits will start to change.
3. Encourage Positive Risk-Taking.
Primary school is the perfect time to try new things, and becoming comfortable with taking positive risks is another critical skill in a child’s development. Some ideas for next year’s risk-taking include:
● Try a new sport or hobby.
● Join a club or start a new one.
● Expand their circle of friends.
● Talk to someone they may not have ever spoken to - you never know what they may have in common!
There are so many ways your child can learn to take a positive risk. The important part as a parent is to always acknowledge and praise the effort and courage it takes to try something new.
Victoria Fisheries Authority
At the 2022 state election, the Victorian Government committed to providing Little Angler Kits to Grade 5 students in all Victorian schools. Earlier this week, our school received a set of these fishing kits for each of our Grade 5 students. The kit includes a fishing rod, reel with line, tackle box with some hooks, sinkers, swivels and a lure as well as a kids guide to fishing all FREE!
Our Grade 5 students will be bringing these fishing kits home early next week. If you would like to find out more information about this government initiative please visit:

PBL Update
Throughout the term we have seen many students trade in their PBL cards for lots of different prizes inside the classroom as well as trading these cards in for prizes from the prize box. We wish to congratulate these students over the last couple of weeks who have kept showing our values of Responsible, Respectful and Resilience.
This week we have had a special reward given to four of our Year 4 students Noah S (4B), Alyssia P, Isabella T and Vihaan K (3B) . They have worked very hard and been very Responsible, Respectful and Resilient, saving their cards to earn a total of 100 cards. This has allowed them to trade his card in for a Special PBL Card. Noah was the first to receive this special card and the other three received them very soon after. It has been amazing seeing the reaction from their peers as there has been plenty of admiration for the card as well as congratulations to all of our Middle School students.
Our PBL rewards will finish in Week 10 of this term, ready to begin from day one of next year. What a fantastic effort by all students in our school who have earned PBL cards and followed our matrix to make our school a calm, happy and safe place to learn
Staff Movement
Mr Kurt Caguin
We are very fortunate this year to have very minimal staff moment in regards to classroom teachers. Miss Anna Druitt has secured a classroom teaching position closer to home in Hawthorn. Anna, we thank you for your time at Resurrection and wish you the best of luck.
Mrs Shannon Ziebell and Miss Jane Huang will be taking a year's leave. Shannon to spend time with her young family and Jane to travel overseas and volunteer as a teacher in Kenya. We hope you enjoy this time away from Resurrection and we look forward to welcoming you back to our staff in 2025.
As mentioned earlier in the year Mr John Hein and Ms Kris Smith will be leaving Resurrection to further develop their careers with John moving to St Mary’s Altona as Deputy Principal and Kris back into the secondary school setting at Overnewton college.
Next year we are welcoming back Mrs Tosh
Kaan from maternity leave and into the art room in a part time capacity.
New to our staff in 2024, we are welcoming Mrs Jacinta Tang and Mr Kurt Caguin to our school community. Jacinta will be part of our prep team and has already attended each of the prep transition sessions so she is a very familiar face to our 2024 prep families.
Mrs Jacinta Tang
Kurt is moving to Melbourne from Sydney and will be a member of the middle school in 2024 teaching in Grade 3B. Kurt joined us earlier in the week for orientation morning to meet his new class. He will be back onsite next Monday!
Mrs Veronica Kulkewycz has been appointed as our Learning Diversity Leader. Veronica may be a familiar face to some of you as she was on staff in 2021 in a part time capacity. Veronica is a very experienced primary school teacher with more than 20 years’ experience working with diverse students.
We warmly welcome Jacinta, Kurt and Veronica to our Resurrection school community.
At this stage it is just our classroom teachers and LSO staff who are confirmed for 2024. Once additional staffing is confirmed it will be communicated via the school newsletter. There may continue to be some staff movement, but our hope is that classroom teacher allocation will remain stable for the commencement of the year. All schools are
continuing to experience high staff turnover along with a reduction in graduate teachers.
The coming year is an exciting and nervous time for not only our students, but also our staff.
As mentioned, many times before in previous newsletters, our children take their lead from
Child Classroom Placement & Procedures Policy
Rationale:
Student learning is our core business at Resurrection Catholic Primary School and so we aim to provide an environment that encourages each child’s educational and social development.
When making decisions about the placement of students we consider the following criteria in an effort to achieve a fair and even distribution of students in each class setting:
● Specific learning needs
● Individual differences
● Gender balance
● Relationships with other students
● Age
● Social and emotional maturity
● Academic achievement
● Family groupings
● Length of time a class or group has been
● together
● Class placements in previous years
● Classroom observations
● Student teacher relationships
● Parent / Carer input
The class structure that is decided upon will aim to:
● Equal range of abilities in each class / year level.
● Keep average class sizes as low and as even as possible.
● Allow for planned and unplanned increase in enrolments.
● Ensure that students identified as requiring additional support are where possible “shared” throughout the school.
The setting of classes requires a great deal of time and thought. Staff use their professional judgement and expertise, along with relevant information provided by parents in an effort to achieve effective class groups that satisfy, where possible, the needs of the individual and the needs of the group. No single factor determines placement, or will necessarily be acted upon. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the Principal to make decisions about classes and the placement of students.
Parents / Caregivers role in the process:
In order to make the best decisions we need as much information as possible. Class teachers have an excellent knowledge of your child/ren, particularly in relation to their social and academic needs in the classroom and school setting. As Parents/Caregivers you are given the opportunity to provide information that you believe could be considered in the placement of your child/ren. What we specifically seek from you
is information about your child's learning or social needs that you believe the school may not be aware of. (Such information would not include a request for a particular teacher or what is commonly called “teacher shopping”). This information should be provided via email or in as a letter placed in an envelope addressed to the Principal and marked “Confidential”. Information provided must specifically relate to the criteria
highlighted above.
The following will not be considered:
1. Requests to have or not to have particular
teachers.
2. Information provided after the due date.
NB. The provision of this information should not be seen in anyway as a guarantee that requests can or will be met.
Communicating Class Placements
Class Placements for the year ahead is
communicated to the students at their first 2023 Student Transition session, which occurred this Monday.
This practice means that:
a. Students will know the name of their teacher for the following year;
b. Students will know which other students will
be in their class; and
c. Parents and carers will have time to talk
positively to their children about the class
experiences they may have the following
year.
PARENT AND CARER COMMITMENT
Parents and carers commit to supporting the
school's Class Placement Policy & Procedure by:
a. Supporting and accepting decisions made by the School; and
b. Being positive with their child about the class placement decision that has been made. (Remember you are the “Directors of First Impressions”.)
SCHOOL COMMITMENT
The School commits to supporting the Class
Placement Policy by:
a. Using informed professional judgement when deciding class placements; and
b. Considering all available information,
including that received from parents and caregivers.
As mentioned in the previous few weeks of the newsletter, our teachers are greatly aware of the expression
“Directors of First Impressions”
and just how important it is to develop a positive relationship with the students within their class and care.
So too, I ask you as parents to be mindful of your role as a director of first impressions when your child/ren discuss their class placement with you.
Your own reaction, expression and comments, be they positive or negative, will have a lasting impression on your child/ren’s attitude to the coming school year. Let’s together make it a positive experience.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark (13: 33-37)
Stay awake! You never know when the Lord will come.
Jesus said to his disciples: ‘Be on your guard, stay awake, because you never know when the time will come. It is like a man travelling abroad: he has gone from home, and left his servants in charge, each with his own task; and he has told the doorkeeper to stay awake. So stay awake, because you do not know when the master of the house is coming, evening, midnight, cockcrow, dawn; if he comes unexpectedly, he must not find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake!’
Gospel Reflection
Stay awake! With these words, Jesus cautions his disciples to be constantly vigilant and to be alert to the return of the Lord. It is a very fitting way to begin the season of Advent. Advent has traditionally been observed as a time of preparation and waiting. It culminates in the Christmas season and so the waiting and preparation is related to the celebration of the coming of Christ into the world.
Perhaps the time of preparation for this Advent is also a call to stay awake and stay alert in faith. One of the great challenges to faith today is the complacency that has taken hold of many in our society. When life is comfortable, the perceived need for faith appears to diminish. Many young people in our society cannot see the value of religious belief or religious practice. In a world of instant communication and instant ‘satisfaction’, the reflective and slow work of faith can seem too much effort for some people. The gospel call to stay awake in preparation for the coming of the Lord is a call to continue the work of bringing about the Kingdom of God.
Over the last three weeks, the gospel passages from Matthew 25 were reminders about continuing to prepare for the coming of the Kingdom. This week, with the beginning of Advent, it is the gospel of Mark that also reminds us that we cannot take the Kingdom for granted and must remain vigilant in working to realise the Kingdom. This vigilance needs to be applied to nurturing our own faith life as well as making a difference in the lives of those around us and the needy in society. Rather than ‘Stay awake!’ maybe some of us need to be told, ‘Wake up!’ It is never too late to pay closer attention to faith and perhaps this Advent is an ideal time to do that.
Have you thought? Beginning Advent
The season of Advent begins this week and continues through the four Sundays of Advent and ends at Christmas Eve. The first week of Advent focuses on the return of the Lord and the following weeks focus more specifically on the anticipation of the birth of Jesus. Rather than simply commemorating an historical event, Advent is a time of preparing our hearts to ‘receive’ Jesus into the world each year. Advent is traditionally marked by the colour of violet – the same colour as used in Lent. In recent years, some parishes have moved to a more blue/mauve colour for Advent to try to distinguish it from the season of Lent.
Living the Gospel - Stay Awake!
By the time the Church begins to celebrate Advent as a period of preparation towards Christmas, the stores have been filling with Christmas paraphernalia for weeks. It starts out small with a few decorations and wrapping paper and eventually takes over every retail outlet. In the midst of this excess of Christmas consumerism, it is often difficult to draw attention to the season of Advent and the need to prepare spiritually for the celebration of Christmas. It is important to stay awake, as we are cautioned in this week’s gospel. Awake to what is happening around us in the world and awake to what is happening within us.
Gospel Focus - The Door Keeper
The image of the doorkeeper from this week’s gospel is an interesting one. It is not unusual to hear references to people being ‘gatekeepers’ today in relation to projects or groups working together. The role of the gatekeeper, or the doorkeeper, is to maintain a watching brief – to be alert to dangers or distractions and to ensure that everyone who is important to the process is invited to participate. Today’s gospel reminds us that as believers we are to be the doorkeepers, or gatekeepers, of the Kingdom, watching for dangers and welcoming in all those who wish to enter.
