Dear Parents, Students & Friends,

2024 Staff Curriculum Planning Day

Monday saw our staff gather to plan for 2024. We started our day by reflecting on our school review where we celebrated all what was achieved in the last four years.

The rest of the day for teachers was lead by Mr Grant Lewis (Learning Consultant) who took staff through a process of delving into the Victorian Curriculum transdisciplinary strands such as Science, Geography, Civics & Citizenship etc.

In their 2024 teaching teams, staff planned the central ideas of each of their units of Inquiry for students next year. Days like this are such a wonderful opportunity for our staff to take time to reflect and learn without the busyness of the usual school day.

Year 3 Sacrament of First Reconciliation

Last Friday our Year Three students participated in their First Reconciliation. RECONCILIATION, as one of the seven sacraments, is a new moment of grace and a time of awareness about our personal and social sin, calling us to remember our Baptismal commitment, our life confirmed in the Spirit, our unity with the Eucharistic people.

I must commend the Grade Three students for the way in which they prepared and approached this sacrament; with reverence and reflection. I would like to thank Fr Gerard and the Resurrection parish team along with Mrs Aclan and the Grade Three teachers for their work in preparing the students for this Sacrament.

2024 Transition Program

The teachers and executive leadership team have begun to put together the 2024 student lists as well as assign teachers and LSOs to each class.

This is a process which we take slowly to make sure that a lot of time and thought is placed into class lists. Please note that the 2024 Prep to Grade 5 Transition sessions are:

●      Monday 27th November 2023

●      Monday 4th December 2023

More details regarding the transition timetable are included further below.

Farewell to Mr Noack

A number of parents have approached me in regards to having the opportunity to farewell Des and thank him for his principalship at Resurrection.

The Resurrection school board and committees will be hosting an afternoon tea on Wednesday 15th of December from 1.30 until 2.20 in the school hall. An Operoo form was sent out yesterday for catering purposes.

2023 End of Term Dates & 2024 Calendar

We are approaching the end of the year and there are many dates of importance coming up! Please look carefully at the dates attached to the back of the newsletter.

Please find attached to this newsletter the 2024 School Calendar While there are still a few dates that need to be confirmed, events such as school terms, school closure days, camps etc are booked and included in this calendar.

Resurrection St Vinnies Christmas Appeal

This Advent we are joining with St. Vincent de Paul society members of Resurrection Parish to collect non-perishable items for those in need. This act links to our Catholic Social Teaching principle of Preferential Option for the Poor.

A flyer has been attached to the back of this newsletter which outlines Advent for 2023 at Resurrection School and Parish.  All families will also receive an Operoo form asking if your child/ren are able to attend the Parish 10.30am Mass on Sunday 3rd of December to bring forward the Resurrection school donations and offer them to the St Vinnies Members of the Resurrection Parish.

Please note that if your child/ren are able to attend this Mass that we ask they wear their school uniform.

God Bless,

Jess Davis

Acting Principal

Our teachers are greatly aware of the expression

“Directors of First Impressions”

and just how important it is to develop a positive relationship with the students within their class and care.

So too, I ask you as parents to be mindful of your role as a director of first impressions when your child/ren discuss their class placement with you.

Your own reaction, expression and comments, be they positive or negative, will have a lasting impression on your child/ren’s attitude to the coming school year. Let’s together make it a positive experience

Prep to Grade 5 Transition Timetable

Maths Results on the Move!

Throughout the year, students at Resurrection School have participated in various Mathematics assessments, ranging from traditional pen-and-paper exams to online testing. The staff and students at Resurrection take great pride in showcasing their learning and reflecting on their academic growth throughout the year. The overarching goal of the school is to not only improve average scores but also achieve a minimum effect size of 0.2 for each semester and 0.4 for the entire school year. In many areas, we have not only met but exceeded this benchmark, which is a remarkable achievement.

During Term 4, in the fifth week, key Mathematics assessments were conducted. These assessments included the 1 Minute Westwood Assessment, Whole School Number Framework (WSNF), Progressive Achievement Test (PAT), and the Multiplication Grid (Y3-6).

Student data explained

Green = Above expected growth

Yellow = Around expected growth

Red = Below expected growth

1 Minute Westwood

This assessment tests students' ability to solve 33 addition sums in 1 minute. It is then repeated with students attempting 33 subtraction, multiplication and division problems within one minute timeframes. The junior year levels take part in addition and subtraction whilst our middle and senior students take part in all four assessments. As the students get older the effect size gets smaller as more students achieve a perfect score of 33 answers correct.

2023 Student Achievements

*Note the margins for growth decreases with the increase in year level due to high starting averages.

Multiplication Grid

This assessment is organised in a 10x10 grid with students attempting to solve the grid within 10 minutes. This grid gives students the opportunity to recognise which multiplication tables they need to focus for weekly homework.

2023 Student Achievements

This means that when students leave Resurrection Primary School they are well equipped with basic number facts including multiplication!

Whole School Number Framework

The Whole School Number Framework assessment challenges students to use mental strategies to count forwards, backwards, read and write numerals, as well as, recall addition and subtraction facts by using efficient strategies.

2023 Student Achievements

Progressive Achievement Test - Maths (PAT)

The PATM assessment is an adaptive test conducted by schools across Australia. It measures students' results against the three domains of number and algebra, Measurement and geometry and statistics and probability. This assessment is conducted twice a year in order to gain an understanding of student achievement across semesters and across various years.

2023 Student Achievements

Resurrection students are experiencing notable progress and expanding their understanding of mathematics. Be sure to ask your child about their mathematics progress to stay informed about their learning journey.

Staff Vs Grade 6 Student Soccer Match

Last Thursday, we were blessed with perfect weather conditions for the annual Grade 6 Student vs Teachers Soccer Match. After winning the last two years in a row, there had been a lot of panic from the teachers’ team in the week leading up, especially after seeing the students practicing at their break times.

The Grade 6 student leaders took the lead up to the game very seriously, preparing by holding training sessions during play times and making sure that the student list was finalised and prepared before the match!

On the day, it was great to see so many students from other year levels cheering, clapping and even dancing for both teams.

The Year Sixes put up a valiant effort, and were able to get ahead very early in the game with a fantastic goal from Ebenezar. The teachers were left stunned as the crowd went absolutely wild.

After a very close ten minutes, the teachers got their first goal. The Grade 6 students demonstrated true resilience and kept fighting back, giving Mr Lewis (who was in the goals) a couple of strong shots to save. However, a second goal for the teachers sealed the victory.

The final score of the game was 2-1 to the teachers, who won their third match in three years.

The Grade 6s should be very proud of their efforts, determination and sportsmanship throughout the game, congratulations everyone!

Our Grade 4 students have been learning about different types of poetry. Students in 4C have requested to share their poems with our school community, here are some sample of their amazing poems.

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew (25: 31 - 46)

He will take his seat on his throne of glory, and he will separate men one from another.

Jesus said to his disciples: ‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels, then he will take his seat on his throne of glory. All the nations will be assembled before him and he will separate men one from another as the shepherd separates sheep from goats. He will place the sheep on his right hand and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right hand, “Come, you whom my Father has blessed, take for your heritage the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food; I was thirsty and you gave me drink; I was a stranger and you made me welcome; naked and you clothed me, sick and you visited me, in prison and you came to see me.” Then the virtuous will say to him in reply, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you; or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and make you welcome; naked and clothe you; sick or in prison and go to see you?” And the King will answer, “I tell you solemnly, in so far as you did this to one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did it to me.” Next he will say to those on his left hand, “Go away from me, with your curse upon you, to the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you never gave me food; I was thirsty and you never gave me anything to drink; I was a stranger and you never made me welcome, naked and you never clothed me, sick and in prison and you never visited me.” Then it will be their turn to ask, “Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty, a stranger or naked, sick or in prison, and did not come to your help?” Then he will answer, “I tell you solemnly, in so far as you neglected to do this to one of the least of these, you neglected to do it to me.” And they will go away to eternal punishment, and the virtuous to eternal life.’

Gospel Reflection

This week’s gospel is the final passage in Matthew’s gospel before the passion narrative – the death and resurrection of Jesus. As such, it provides a powerful end point to the teaching ministry section of the gospel. In many ways this passage can be seen as a summary of Jesus’ vision for the Kingdom – a world in which the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked and the imprisoned are treated with respect and dignity as a child of God. This is exactly what Jesus himself did throughout his ministry and it is what all Christian people are called to do.

Like the virtuous people of the passage, there are many times when we do not know the good work that we do. There are many times when our positive interaction with another person can be the difference between hope and despair for that person – and we may never know the difference we have made in their life. The challenge presented by Jesus is that whenever we see a person in need our response to them should be as if we were responding to Jesus himself.

But what of the times we fail to respond to the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked and the imprisoned? Who are they for us? … That irritating person who we’ve never been able to get along with? … That person who’s just arrived in the country and can’t speak the language properly? … That kid who always looks dirty and nobody talks to? … That girl who’s no good at relating to other people and everyone avoids her? … The homeless man in the street who asks for money? … The asylum seeker fleeing their country who didn’t go through all the right channels to immigrate? … Lord, when did we see you, and not come to your help?

Scriptural context – Matthew 25

This week’s gospel passage comes as the third in a sequence of passages that make up Matthew Chapter 25. The chapter addresses the gospel’s intended audience who were caught in a time of uncertainty. Many had expected the promised return of the Lord within their lifetime and had seen the fall of Jerusalem and the destruction of the Temple by the Romans in 70 CE as a sign that the end of days was approaching. The three gospel passages speak of continuing to prepare for the coming of the Kingdom and the need to act in a way that works to bring about the reign of God in the world.

Have you thought? – Christ the King

This week’s liturgy marks the end of the liturgical cycle. Next week begins the new year with the season of Advent. The liturgy is celebrated as the Feast of Christ the King – reminding us of a very imperial model of church and theology that reflected the structure of the Roman Empire and later, Feudal Europe. To have this reading on the feast of Christ the King is a powerful reminder of how Jesus envisaged the Kingdom of God. For Jesus, the Kingdom was not a rule of power and status but a rule of justice and peace for even the lowliest. It is an apt conclusion to the liturgical year.

Gospel Focus – The Final Judgment

Often referred to as ‘The Final Judgment’, this gospel presents an understanding of judgment and punishment that reflects the theology and culture of the first century. It is an image that has continued to dominate Christian art and theology for most of its history: the idea of God sitting in judgment on the final day and weighing up each individual’s actions. It is often applied very literally and it is a dominant image of God represented in the media – TV sit-coms and movies often draw on the image. It is a literalist image of God that needs to be challenged. We must remember that the focus of the gospel passage is on the call to action for justice.
