Dear Parents, Students & Friends,
This weekend we approach the second week of Advent, Second Sunday of Advent: A time of Preparation ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths’ (Luke 3:4). As we dwell on these words of St John the Baptist, our sense of anticipation begins to increase - especially in the school setting during the second week of Advent! The promises of God continue! May each of us remember this Advent to actively prepare for Christ.
Resurrection Family Christmas Carols
Wednesday evening was such a wonderful event for our community. We gathered together to celebrate Christmas and join in song. The organisation of such an event doesn't just happen! My sincere thanks to Mrs Erica Aclan and Miss Jody Banks for not only their incredible planning of this event, but also the way in which they were able to prepare the students for both the nativity play and the carols performance. To see our students on the stage with so much confidence and singing so beautifully was an absolute joy. I think all in attendance would agree that it was a wonderful way for us to celebrate the end of the school year. It also serves to remind us that during this holy time we are called to wait with anticipation knowing the joys of what is yet to come!
Resurrection St Vinnies Christmas Appeal
What a wonderful response we have had to our call for donations to the St Vinnies Christmas appeal. The contributions from families and staff were just extraordinary considering the recent interest rate increases and additional expenses to the everyday cost of living at the moment!
Thank you also to the students who attended the 10.30am Mass last Sunday to present the donations to the Parish on behalf of the school showing our Catholic Social teachings in action!
On Tuesday I received a card from the St Vincent De Paul members of our parish thanking us for our donations, I have included it below for you all to read.
2023 Fundraising Efforts
I am pleased to share that we have raised a little over $10,000 this year with all of the different fundraising events. This money will be going directly towards the upgrade of the basketball court which is next to the oval. This project will begin over the school holidays with the finished surface being installed in March, as the concrete needs maximum curing time.
The basketball court will look a little like this when it is complete!
2024 Canteen update
Thank you to the families who took the time to send in feedback based on the Proposed Canteen menu. This feedback has been given to Leo from Jude Fina Foods.
The Canteen will be operational from Wednesday 7th February. It will operate each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Parents can order lunch orders using the Quikr app. Please note that all orders will be cashless and there won't be any over the counter sales available.
More information regarding ordering and the Canteen menu will be included in the first newsletter for 2024.
Thank you to School Board & School Parent Committee
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the members of the Resurrection School Advisory Board, Canteen and Fundraising Committee. My sincere thanks to Jacqui, Mary Anne, Caterina, Angela, Jessica, Amy, Daniella, Xy-Za, Lisa and Amanda for giving of their time to improve our school by working together to provide so many wonderful experiences for the Resurrection students.
Next year we will have the School Board as well as a fundraising committee. We are always looking for new parents to join!
God Bless,
Jess Davis

Year 5 Sovereign Hill Camp
Last week the Year 5 students went to camp at Sovereign Hill.
When we arrived at Sovereign Hill we were excited for what we were going to do during camp. But first we had to figure out our cabins. We stayed in the Southern Barracks and the Esmond Terrace Cabins. Once we knew our cabins, we had to go straight to costume school where we dressed up as olden day people back in 1854 and roleplayed schooling life.
5A were in the St Alipius School, 5B were in the Wesleyan Day School and 5C was in the Ragged School. During school we did some fun activities like Gold Panning. Some people actually found gold in the waterhole. We went to the gold pour where a blacksmith melted down gold and turned it back into a solid. We played a game called gold fever which was a game to find black metal balls and then exchange them for money from the gold buyers, and whoever had the most money would win.
We went on a little train, down a mine where people had mined for gold in the past. That night we went to an Aura light show which told the story of the Eureka Stockade. It was very cool to see in the dark and we were outside till 10:00 on the first night. Everyone slept really well ready for the next day. On the second night in the Esmond Terrace Mrs Betham, Mrs Claudette and Miss Alex, knocked on our doors and we had to discover who it was and then they finally admitted it was them. It was a funny thing to do. We laughed when we found out that it was them!
The food we had was from the Sovereign Hill cafe. Breakfast was toast and cereal, for lunch there was Sausage Rolls and meat pies and for dinner we had Roast Chicken which was really good. On the last day for lunch, we had a lunch roll with carrots, lettuce, cheese and tomatoes and for the snack we had prawn crackers which had a nice crunch. Then we went back on the bus and arrived back at school. It really was an amazing experience where we were able to learn what life was like back on the Gold Fields in 1854. Times have really changed!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 1(1-8)
Make straight the paths of the Lord.
The beginning of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. It is written in the book of the prophet Isaiah:
Look, I am going to send my messenger before you;
he will prepare your way.
A voice cries in the wilderness:
Prepare a way for the Lord,
make his paths straight,
and so it was that John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. All Judaea and all the people of Jerusalem made their way to him, and as they were baptised by him in the river Jordan they confessed their sins. John wore a garment of camel-skin, and he lived on locusts and wild honey. In the course of his preaching he said, ‘Someone is following me, someone who is more powerful than I am, and I am not fit to kneel down and undo the strap of his sandals. I have baptised you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.’
Gospel Reflection
This week’s gospel captures beautifully the spirit of preparation and waiting that characterises the liturgical season of Advent. John the Baptist is portrayed as fulfilling the prophecies of Isaiah and others as the one who comes before the Lord preparing the way. He is a messenger, sent by God to ‘do the groundwork’ preparing the people for the coming of the Christ. Although this passage is used during Advent as preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus, we know that John was a contemporary (indeed cousin) of Jesus and the time of preparation was immediately prior to Jesus’ public ministry.
John appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism for forgiveness of sins. It may seem odd to think of going to the wilderness to try to influence people. Today we might think that the city centre or street corner might be the better venue to preach something. What is it about the wilderness? Reference is made to the wilderness several times in scripture. It is used as a place of preparation and encounter with God. The wilderness referred to was a vast expanse of emptiness on the eastern side of the Jordan River. It was not uncommon for wandering preachers like John and Jesus to go out into the wilderness as a way of making a break from their previous life and getting themselves ready in body and spirit to begin their ministry. The wilderness to the east of the Jordan was also the place in which many of the rebels based themselves. There was a sense that challenge and unrest came out of the wilderness. In many ways that is what Jesus – heralded by John – brought out of the wilderness as well.
Historical Context – A Baptism of Forgiveness
The understanding that we generally have of baptism today has not always been the case. At the time of John and Jesus, the Jewish tradition used baptism as a ritual bath to cleanse a person who had become ritually unclean and make them able to participate in religious rituals. What John was preaching was a baptism for the forgiveness of sins – a new interpretation at the time. He emphasised that repentance was essential for forgiveness and that there needed to be a conscious returning to God. John’s baptism was a symbolic act to signify the willingness of the person to renounce their sins and make a more conscious return to God.
Scriptural context – Mark
The gospel of Mark is sometimes portrayed as a ‘no fuss’ gospel. Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in this week’s passage. We have the first eight verses of the gospel and the author wastes no time in announcing the purpose, ‘The beginning of the Good News about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.’ The gospel of Mark does not give any infancy narrative or genealogy like Matthew or Luke, nor a theological foreword like John. It jumps straight in with a declaration that Jesus is the Son of God and almost immediately begins to explore his ministry.
Gospel Focus – Preparing the Way
The gospel passage quotes the prophet Isaiah (although text combines Malachi 3:1; Isaiah 40:3; and Exodus 23:20) and casts John the Baptist in the role of fulfilling the prophecy of the voice that cries in the wilderness, ‘Prepare a way for the Lord’. The description of John in camel-skin and eating locusts and wild honey is designed to align him with Elijah, the great prophet of Jewish history. In a very short and sharp passage the gospel ties the coming of Jesus to the expectation of a messiah that has run through Jewish history and been foretold by the great prophets.
