Dear Parents & Carers,
With a grateful heart, I write this last letter to you in my final week as principal of Resurrection.
Since commencing in May of 2019, who would have imagined the changes and challenges we were all to face with the onset of a global pandemic, on-line teaching and lockdowns.
There’s an expression that goes, ‘I’m here for a good time, not a long time.’ And that about sums up my experience at Resurrection. Those who have got to know me personally over these last four and a half years know how passionate I am about improving learning outcomes for children and raising the professional standard of teaching & learning through high expectations, personal learning and accountability. As I look around at the school, our students, community and staff, I am proud of so much that we have achieved together.
Over the last four years, the school has revised its vision to more clearly recognise and embrace our diverse community. Our new vision has become the impetus for strengthening our school’s Catholic identity through promoting our heritage, traditions and a strong prayer culture. An agreed pedagogical approach, data plan and assessment schedule have been developed, implemented and supported by regular staff professional learning. The implementation of a distributed leadership model has been embedded into the school’s practice ensuring consistency across all year levels. Leaders and teachers now have strong data literacy skills and regularly present detailed analyses of student learning. A performance and development culture is now in place along with a relentless focus on wellbeing ensuring that a consistent approach to behaviour management and the care of our students is always a priority.
In June of this year, I was asked by Mr John Mills, (Regional General Manager for the Northern Region at Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools) to act as Interim Principal at St Brendan’s – Flemington, until the end of the 2023 school year.
In taking on this additional role, I knew it was possible due to having a highly professional leadership and administration team at Resurrection. Looking back over the last six months, my belief in the capacity of staff to rise to the occasion, flourish and grow has certainly been validated.
It is at this point that I take the opportunity to acknowledge and personally thank Mrs Jess Davis for the way she has so professionally and pastorally worked these last four years, and especially in her role as Acting Principal. She has truly shown herself to be an exceptionally capable & reflective leader, continually seeking ways to enhance the school for the benefit of our students. The school Christmas Carols Evening, that occurred last week, is a simple but wonderful example of her passion and will to see Resurrection shine. Building community takes effort and care, something she has shown in the daily decisions she continues to make in her role as acting principal. I ask you, when the opportunity presents itself, to individually and as a community, to take the opportunity to acknowledge Jess for the dedication and commitment she continues to show for the school.
One of most rewarding achievements during my time at Resurrection has been the development of a vision and mission statement that reflect our community. I can truly say that our school’s motto, “We Care” is definitely being lived out in the spirit of Christ’s love and compassion. I call upon all of you to reflect upon the school’s vision statement, to remind yourselves as to why we do what we do, who we are and who we are doing this for, how we do it and what we will achieve if we stay true to our mission. For this is “The Resurrection Way”.
Called by Faith (Why)
Our Community, Diverse In Culture, Language and Tradition (Who)

With this in mind, I wish to also share some personal quotes that I have tried to live by as a principal. It may explain why am the way I am and do the things I do. Some I achieve better than others. I’ll let you be the judge of that.
o Take a 10 to 30 minute walk every day and while you do, smile.
o Sit in silence for 10 minutes each day.
o When you wake up in the morning, complete the following statement, “My purpose is to …. today”.
o Live with the 3 E’s, Energy, Enthusiasm, Empathy, and the 3 F’s … Faith, Family & Friends.
o Spend more time with people over the age of 70 and under the age of six.
o Dream more while you are awake.
o Try to make at least three people smile each day.
o Realise that life is a school and you are here to learn, pass all your tests. Problems are simply part of the curriculum that appear and fade away like algebra class but the lessons you learn will last a lifetime.
o Smile and laugh more. It will keep the energy vampires away.
o Life isn’t fair, but it’s still good.
o Life is too short to waste time hating or disliking anyone.
o Don’t take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
o You don’t have to win every argument. Agree to disagreements.
o Make peace with your past, so it won’t muck up the present.
o Don’t compare your life with others’. You have no idea what their journey is all about.
o Burn the candles, use the nice sheets. Don’t save it for a special occasion. Today is special.
o No one is in charge of your happiness except you.
o Forgive everyone for everything.
o What other people think of you is none of your business.
o Time heals almost everything. Give time, time.
o However good or bad a situation is, it will change.
o Your job won’t take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch.
o Get rid of anything that isn’t useful, beautiful or joyful.
o The best is yet to come.
o No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up.
o Do the right thing.
o Call your family often.
o Each night before you go to bed complete the following statement: “I am thankful for…” “Today I accomplished…”
o Remember that you are too blessed to be stressed.
o Enjoy the ride. Remember this is not Disney World and you certainly don’t want a fast pass. Make the most of it and enjoy the ride.
I certainly appreciate that there has been much anticipation in knowing whom the new principal of Resurrection will be for 2024 and thank you for your patience during this time. I know that Mr Adrian Glasby, who is a skilled educator and leader with over 34 years’ experience in Catholic Education, will continue to enhance Resurrection as a school of first choice for our families of Kings Park and surrounding areas.
Adrian will be very much missed as principal of St Christopher’s Airport West. I know that you will welcome him as generously and warmly as you have I.
Adrian is very excited to take up his new position in Term 1 2024 and is looking forward to both joining and leading the Resurrection school community.
I wish you each a very holy, safe and sacred Christmas and thank you for allowing to serve this community these last four and a half years.
With kindest regards,
Des Noack
Principal
Dear Parents, Students & Friends,
As we approach the third Sunday of Advent, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the theme of Joy.
Joy is a natural response when promises are fulfilled and long-awaited hopes are met. In the biblical context, we see this joy expressed by the Magi (Wise Men) from the East when they saw the star above the place where Jesus was. Matthew tells us that they "rejoiced with very great joy" before humbling themselves in worship (2:10). Similarly, the shepherds, upon witnessing the birth of Jesus, returned glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, just as they had been told (Luke 2:20).
During this third week of Advent, we have the opportunity to experience this same "very great joy" that comes from knowing Jesus. As we prepare for the celebration of His birth, let us reflect on the promises fulfilled and the hope that Jesus brings into our lives.
May this season of Advent be filled with joy and anticipation as we await the coming of our Saviour. I encourage you to engage in meaningful conversations with your children about the significance of joy and how it relates to our faith during this special time.
Congratulations to our Resurrection Staff!
I am very pleased to share that Mrs Sophie Duddington welcomed a little boy; Patrick Damien Duddington on Saturday afternoon. All are doing well and enjoying the new baby bubble!
Mr Moloney and his wife Kristen are expecting a baby very early in January. We wish them all the best as they prepare for this very exciting time.
Woolies Donation of A Christmas Hamper
Last week a HUGE Christmas hamper was donated by Emma Magri who works at Woolworths, Taylors Lakes for us to give to a family in our community who are in need this Christmas. Thank you to Emma for thinking of our community, the family who received this hamper were very grateful for the gift.
Thank you
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support and partnership in your child's education this year, particularly over the last six months while I have been in the acting principal role. I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity and thank Des and Fr Gerard for their trust to lead Resurrection Catholic Parish school over the last six months.
During this time as Acting Principal, I have been supported by an incredible staff who are truly exceptional in all they do. My sincere thanks in particular to the members of the school executive and level leader team who have supported me in ensuring that the strong foundations continued.
For much of this week I have been in contact with Mr Adrian Glasby our incoming Principal. I’m looking forward to working alongside Adrian and supporting his transition to Principalship at Resurrection. Adrian has confirmed that he will officially begin on Monday, March 4 (Week 6, Term 1), therefore I will continue in the Acting Principal role until that date.
It is very challenging to put into words my gratitude to Des for all he has given to our community. His leadership during the COVID years really highlighted his commitment to the educational growth and care for our students. The renewed school vision highlights his aspirations for this community and it is now ultimately up to us to make this vision more than mere words. I am very grateful for Des’ mentorship both professionally and personally. I know I have grown as an educator and leader having worked alongside him and for that I will forever be grateful that our paths crossed. Finally, I wish Des all the best in his principalship at St Catherine’s, I know he will serve the community with the same spirit and sense of purpose that he has for the students of Resurrection.
For those families who are leaving Resurrection, I wish you all the very best and trust the transition to your new school goes smoothly.
Finally, my wishes for you and your family is for a blessed Christmas. I hope that you all enjoy the summer break with quieter days spent with family and friends.
God Bless,
Jess Davis
Acting Principal

Regarding Footwear
The following is why the school places such importance on the wearing of correct school shoes.
Our children spend 30 hours a week in school shoes, that's in excess of 15 000 hours in a school child’s lifetime. Choosing the right shoe for your child is extremely important.
Shoes that fit are vital to a young child's rapidly growing feet. By the time a child reaches the age of 12, his or her feet will have reached about 90 percent of their adult length. Therefore, development of a child's feet is especially important in these first 12 years of life and it is the reason podiatrists consider the early years to be essential in the development of feet and foot problems.
Children who continuously wear incorrect shoes can develop many problems in later life and exacerbate inherited foot problems.
Common problems such as hammer toes, caused by shoes which are too big or too small, ingrown toenails, cracked or fissured heels from continued use of sling back shoes, and corns under the toe nails can be prevented by selecting the right shoe.
What type of shoe should I buy?
Traditional school shoes are the best option for putting your children in good stead. Not only are they likely to outlast sports shoes, but also will provide the support so crucial to young feet
Sports shoes are marketed so extensively, children can be under a lot of peer pressure to wear the most expensive brand sports shoes. At the other end of the scale, many parents view cheap sports shoes as an alternative to traditional school shoes. But, as the name suggests, sports shoes are best left for sporting activities.
Not only are sports shoes unnecessary for children in their everyday school activities, but also some of the cheaper brands offer little in the way of support..
What should the shoe be made of?
Podiatrists recommend professionally fitted supportive, lace-up, leather shoes as the best option for school footwear. Leather offers durability, is easy to clean and allows feet to breathe.
Many sports shoes, on the other hand, have a high synthetic quantity that can produce a hot, moist environment. This creates a perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungus that can lead to tinea, infected nails and foot odour.
How long should the shoes last?
Children grow at different speeds and wear shoes down at different rates. But there are some important things to do once you have selected the right shoe.
First, ensure you check the fit regularly. Children's feet grow quickly and, since shoes up to two sizes too small may not cause a lot of discomfort for the child, you may not even be aware a new pair is needed.
It is also important to regularly check the shoe for wear. Shoes that are worn down badly can cause as many problems to a child's feet as ill-fitting shoes.
So get your children off on the right foot with a good pair of shoes.
When Are Sports Shoes Worn?
Sport shoes are to be worn only on days that the physical education classes occur or when the student is wearing their sports uniform for interschool sports or competition.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John 1(6-8 & 19-28)
There stands among you, unknown to you, the one who is coming after me.
A man came, sent by God.
His name was John.
He came as a witness,
as a witness to speak for the light,
so that everyone might believe
through him.
He was not the light,
only a witness to speak for the light.
This is how John appeared as a witness. When the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, ‘Who are you?’ he not only declared, but he declared quite openly, ‘I am not the Christ.’ ‘Well then,’ they asked, ‘are you Elijah?’ ‘I am not,’ he said. ‘Are you the Prophet?’ He answered, ‘No.’ So they said to him, ‘Who are you? We must take back an answer to those who sent us. What have you to say about yourself?’ So John said, ‘I am, as Isaiah prophesied: a voice that cries in the wilderness:Make a straight way for the Lord.’
Now these men had been sent by the Pharisees, and they put this further question to him, ‘Why are you baptising if you are not the Christ, and not Elijah, and not the prophet?’ John replied, ‘I baptise with water; but there stands among you – unknown to you – the one who is coming after me; and I am not fit to undo his sandal-strap.’ This happened at Bethany, on the far side of the Jordan, where John was baptising.
This week’s gospel should sound very familiar. It is the gospel of John version of the passage used in last week’s liturgy, which came from the gospel of Mark. Again, it recalls the ministry of John the Baptist but it is given the particular slant of the gospel of John. Aside from the greater focus on the conversational interaction, it presents John as a ‘witness’. This is perhaps more typical of the John gospel emphasis on personal encounter with Jesus. Rather than acting as something of a herald, as in last week’s account, here John the Baptist is witnessing ‘to speak for the light’. He makes a very clear distinction between himself and the Christ, his mission is simply to point towards the light; the Christ.
Our common understanding of the word ‘witness’ tends to be related to legal situations: providing a witness statement or acting as a witness to a fact in court. The use of witness in this gospel carries a different connotation: to provide witness through action and lifestyle that draws others to wonder about and perhaps come to accept the motivating belief. It is this understanding of witness that all Christians are called to provide. We are called to witness to our beliefs in the way that we live our lives, engage with others and hold to certain truths. Of course, there are some Christians who believe that their witness needs to be more obvious and more clearly stated. They feel that providing witness, or testimony, to their faith through spoken proclamation has a greater potential to change lives. Whether we choose to witness through our words or through our actions it is essential that both words and actions have integrity; that there is no clash between what we proclaim and the way we live.
Have you thought? A time to Rejoice!
This Sunday, the third Sunday of Advent is traditionally known as Gaudete Sunday. Gaudete is the Latin word for Rejoice! Advent was originally celebrated as a five-week season and with the same fasting and penitential nature as the season of Lent. The third Sunday, Gaudete, was like a break for rejoicing in the midst of the fasting. When Advent was reduced to four weeks and the nature of the season altered, Gaudete Sunday was retained. The colour of this Sunday is rose – a celebratory colour – and it is reflected in the vestments worn by the priest and in the colour of the third candle used in Advent wreaths.
Living the Gospel - A Witness? Me?
It came as something of a surprise to me to think that other people might observe the way I treated others and draw conclusions about my motivation. It was when I started to work with young people that the truth of this was revealed. I realised that my actions could speak so much louder than anything I might say. I hoped that the young people I was working with might stop some time and think to themselves, ‘I wonder why he treats us all that way? I wonder how it fits with that religion stuff he talks about?’ Well, I can hope can’t I?
Gospel Focus – Same but different
Having the same gospel passage from two different gospels used in the liturgy in consecutive weeks is an ideal opportunity to highlight the different focus adopted by the different gospels. The language of John’s gospel is remarkably different from that of the three synoptic gospels (synoptic = ‘seen together’). The synoptics share a fairly common narrative style, while John relies much more on metaphor and imagery – it is a more poetic language. In the gospel account of John the Baptist we see in John gospel’s greater emphasis on the conversation around what was occurring, while the Markan version emphasises recording the event.
