Term 3 Week 7 of 10

Friday, 23th August 2024

Message From the Principal

Dear parents/carers,

This coming Monday September 2, our year Prep, One and Two students will be participating in our Junior School Sports. Students are to wear their sports uniform. Some of our Year 6 student leaders will also be helping with the event.

The children will be participating in a running race and various team games like tunnel ball, sack races, hitting targets and much more. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to enjoy sport and be involved in individual and team events.

The Junior School Sports begins at 11.30am and will be finished by 1pm. We warmly invite parents to come along and watch.  A reminder for children to wear their school hats on this day.

In another section of our newsletter, Shannon has spoken about the annual survey that Catholic Primary Schools complete called the MACSIS Survey. This survey gives us the opportunity to celebrate our achievements as a school and to continue to strive to get better.  We look forward to hearing from our community through this survey.

This week I’ve had the pleasure of seeing the preparation that Jody Banks, other staff and our students have been putting into our upcoming Senior School Production.  I’m happy to say it looks amazing!

God Bless

Father’s Day

What a wonderful celebration we had this morning with our Resurrection fathers and father-like figures! A HUGE thank you to all the special visitors who were able to attend, enjoy an egg & bacon roll and play some games and activities with their children.

I must thank our incredible staff for giving up their morning to assist with ensuring that this community event was a success. Thank you to Rachael Bonavia, Michelle Minos and Anna Attard for their planning and preparation of the morning. An extra special thank you to Fr Gerard for giving our special fathers and father like figures a blessing.

To all our Resurrection dads, grandpas, uncles and special friends, I hope that you all have a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday, and may you be recognised for all you do not just on Sunday but each and every day. Look out in next week's newsletter for photos from this morning's celebrations!

Colour Explosion Fun Run

Just a reminder that the Colour Explosion Fun Run, will be held on Friday 6th September.

This year we are fundraising for new sports equipment to replace some of the older damaged equipment. Here is our current leaderboard. We look forward to seeing more and more students create profiles over the next few days!

Macsis Survey

What an amazing week we had full of celebrations throughout the week of Book Week. We celebrated with some fantastic special competitions and events but the highlight was definitely the Book Week Parade on Tuesday morning held in the costume. As students entered the courtyard in the morning there was a certain magic in the air as we were welcomed by the Harry Potter theme music and many magical characters. Well done to all of our wonderful community who got involved and supported each other as each grade paraded around the courtyard.

A big thank you to our staff who always get involved and create such a fun and inspirational experience when taking part in events such as these. We are so lucky to have such passionate staff who love to get involved in such special events. Thank you to Mr Dalton for his very impressive MC skills, Miss Banks for your work with the set up and parade music, Miss Salloum for overseeing the organisation of our Spelling Bee and our many staff who supported these events and/or judged our writing, illustration and colouring competitions.

MACSIS Survey

A reminder that the Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools – School Improvement Surveys (MACSSIS) will be happening Monday 2 September – Friday 20 September 2024. Throughout each year, we pause to listen to our students, families and staff to gauge how our learning community is traveling. This feedback is invaluable to our progress as effective school communities and is backed by evidence-based research and best practices.

Students at our school will be provided with supervised sessions, where teachers are on hand to help and answer any questions. Families and staff can complete the survey anytime over the three-week window via an emailed link and password. Feedback has indicated that previous surveys were completed across a range of mobile devices and different web browsers. Our community’s opinions are critical to understanding how our school is performing – MACSSIS is a key data source for guiding the ongoing work to improve our school.

Over the next week or two, you may receive a phone call and a special code if you have been randomly selected to participate in the MACSIS survey here at Resurrection. All participants are invited, welcomed and 100 per cent voluntary. The surveys are not a test; they are an inclusive way to support the work we are already doing to improve our school. Everyone has the right to refuse to participate in, or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during or after completion of the survey.

Please notify the office if your child does not wish to participate. If you would like more information, please contact the school.

P-2 Tabloid Sports & Hats

On Monday 2nd September, our Prep, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students will take part in the Tabloid Sports during Sessions 3 and 4. A reminder to families that as the weather begins to get warmer, it is a good idea to start bringing back school hats. This will also be a very easy way for students and staff to identify which house they belong to as they work their way through some fun activities and events!

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Mark(7: 1-8. 14-15. 21-23)

You forget the commandments of God and hold onto human Tradition

The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered round Jesus, and they noticed that some of his disciples were eating with unclean hands, that is, without washing them. For the Pharisees, and the Jews in general, follow the tradition of the elders and never eat without washing their arms as far as the elbow; and on returning from the market place they never eat without first sprinkling themselves. There are also many other observances which have been handed down to them concerning the washing of cups and pots and bronze dishes. So, these Pharisees and scribes asked him, ‘Why do your disciples not respect the tradition of the elders but eat their food with unclean hands?’ He answered, ‘It was of you hypocrites that Isaiah so rightly prophesied in this passage of scripture:

This people honours me only with lip-service,

while their hearts are far from me.

The worship they offer me is worthless,

the doctrines they teach are only human regulations.

You put aside the commandment of God to cling to human traditions.’

He called the people to him again and said, ‘Listen to me, all of you, and understand. Nothing that goes into a man from outside can make him unclean; it is the things that come out of a man that make him unclean. For it is from within, from men’s hearts, that evil intentions emerge: fornication, theft, murder, adultery, avarice, malice, deceit, indecency, envy, slander, pride, folly. All these evil things come from within and make a man unclean.’

Gospel Reflection

No matter how good the intention, sometimes misguided principles can lead to false action. This is what Jesus chastised the Pharisees about. The traditions that had been established through the Pharisees and the Lawyers were certainly based on the Law as stated in the Torah. However, the practices that had been established to try to help people honour the Torah had effectively replaced the Law. In order to maintain spiritual cleanliness, a tradition of physical cleanliness had emerged – particularly around interaction with Gentiles and around eating. However, the purpose of the tradition had become lost. The need for physical cleanliness had replaced the maintenance of spiritual cleanliness.

The Pharisees observe some of the disciples eating without properly washing their hands and challenge Jesus about it. They are upholding the tradition that has effectively become the Law. Jesus reminds them – somewhat forcefully – that these external practices are not the Law; rather the Law is observed internally. Jesus goes so far as to call the Pharisees hypocrites. It is a criticism of them that the gospel writers attribute to Jesus quite frequently. For Jesus, hypocrisy was one of the greatest failings. Because Jesus placed such a high price on integrity of word and action he could not abide those who proclaimed to be just, pious or forgiving and yet acted in ways that were contrary to these claims. His chastisement of the Pharisees – calling them hypocrites – was a challenge to their observation of external practices and rituals instead of seeking to understand the Torah as a call to a change of heart. Jesus points out that no amount of ritual cleansing will make a person clean within. Similarly, evil and uncleanliness come from within a person – one doesn’t ‘catch it’ from contact with strangers.

Historical Context – Pharisees

Pharisees were mostly lay men (i.e. generally not Priests) who were characterised by a strict observance of the Torah as well as an oral tradition of teaching and interpretation. They believed that the Torah required interpretation – by engaging in this interpretation they participated in God’s ongoing revelation. They also had a strong belief that all Jewish people were called to be a priestly people. This belief naturally put them at odds with the Priests of the Temple. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE, the teachings of the Pharisees gained prominence and eventually developed into Rabbinic Judaism that continues today.

Gospel Focus - Mark’s Audience

It is widely believed that the Gospel of Mark was written for a predominantly Greek-speaking, Gentile audience. Today’s gospel passage is a perfect example of literary evidence that has been used to establish this position. The gospel writer clearly explains the Jewish practice of washing to the elbows before eating and ritual cleansing upon return from the marketplace where they would have encountered Gentiles. Obviously, a Jewish audience would not need this explanation. This practice of looking for information about the author and their audience within the text itself is a form of Literary Criticism.

Gospel Focus - The things within

We live in a culture that is very quick to lay blame on external factors; some people are very reluctant to accept responsibility for their own actions and look for opportunities to distance themselves from feelings of guilt or even regret. Jesus makes it very clear that evil intentions – the things that make a person ‘unclean’ – actually come from within. He presents a confronting list of the things that come from within and we may be able to add others relevant to our own time. In our culture of no personal responsibility, Jesus challenges us to rethink just where the buck does stop.

Communion to the Sick and Homebound

Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion are lay people who share the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ with the faithful. They perform an important role in the life of the Catholic Church especially, for those who are unable to attend the weekly Mass with the whole community because of ill health or frailty.

This ministry is becoming more significant in our parish because of the growing number of parishioners who are house bound. If you would like to be part of this ministry, please contact Fr Gerard for more information on 7064 3920.

Resurrection – Landscape

Thank you to those who gave their feedback about the landscaping plans. The design will go ahead as planned. The next stage, we are seeking your import into the specifics of the design. The colour of the exposed aggregate concrete, the style of cobble stone etc. A meeting will be held on Monday 9th September at 7pm in the Parish Office.

Production Make-up/ Photo Day

On Monday we had the Grade 6 Production

Make-up, Hair & Photo Day where all of the cast had their make-up done, faces painted, hairstyles and costumes put on for the official cast photos.

Our wonderful LSOs did all the make-up and hair and Ms Mary Flahavin designed most of the costumes. Mrs Aclan and Miss Salloum took the photos and as you can see, the result was amazing!!!

There are only 3 weeks to go until the show and ticket information will be sent out shortly. Looking forward to another wonderful Resurrection production

Andre's U10s soccer team participated in an invitation-only tournament this year - the Junior Champions League 2024. The qualifiers kicked off on ANZAC Day where clubs from 5 zones around Victoria (North, South, East, West and Geelong) were invited to compete. They participated in group stages each month and progressed onto the quarterfinals. On Saturday, 24 August, Andre's team competed in the semi-finals and went through to the grand finals on the same night. After a tense 45 minutes, they ended up taking out the win at 4-2 and were crowned the title of U10s JCL Champions 2024!

We love to share the different outside of school events our students are part of.

If you have something to share, please email office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au
