Principals Letter

Dear parents/carers,

What a wonderful day our Prep students had on Wednesday as they celebrated their milestone of completing 100 days at school. It’s only the beginning but what a wonderful beginning it has been for them.

As I reflect on their 100 days, it helps me reflect on what I want for them in their 7 years at our school.

As principal I want them to:

  • Be part of a community where they feel safe and welcome

  • To know the love of God and be called to act as witnesses of this love in all they do

  • To have their emotional and educational needs met in a caring environment

  • To be more than proficient in English and Maths and to receive support where needed

  • To be taught the skills they need, in a sequential and age appropriate way by dedicated, skilled and resourced teachers

  • To love learning and love themselves.

This is my vision for your children.

God Bless,

Deputy Principal: Wellbeing & Community

I’m excited to share that the Colour Fun Run is back for 2024!

The Resurrection Colour Explosion Fun Run, will be held on Friday 6th September with fundraising information booklets coming home today. This year we are fundraising for new sporting equipment to replace some of the older damaged equipment. Our fundraising goal this year is $5,000.

On the day of the Colour Fun Run, students will be required to wear their sports uniform. All students are encouraged to wear a white (or old light coloured t-shirt) to school to wear during the fun run. All students will be provided with sunglasses in order to protect their eyes from the coloured powder. Please note that the coloured power is non toxic. It is made of high-quality corn starch and is dyed with food colours. It’s also biodegradable, skin-safe and environmentally friendly.

An alternative fun run course will be set up for students who do not wish to participate in the colour explosion aspect of the fun run. We would love to have you join us to view the Colour Explosion Fun Run and see the joy that the students will have in participating in this exciting event. There will be a special timetable for the afternoon which will be shared with you over the next few weeks. Look out for an Operoo form being shared with you in the next few weeks so your child can participate in the event.

A HUGE thank you to Amanda Azzopardi from our School Advisory Board for her organisation and assistance in booking the colour run. I will be looking for assistance from parents a few days before the colour run to help prepare the colour powder. If you are able to assist, please email the office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au. I’m looking forward to seeing a sea of colour and happy smiley faces on Friday 6th of September.

100 Days of Prep!

A big congratulations to our littlest learners in Prep on achieving 100 Days of Learning here at Resurrection! Our Prep students celebrated their very special day by dressing up as 100 year olds, welcomed by some beautiful balloon garlands and shiny streamers, photo props and fun activities for the day. They also finished their day with a conga line throughout the school, where our older students all celebrated their fantastic achievement! We are looking forward to many more days of learning to come. Thank you to our wonderful Prep team Mrs Pohl, Ms Leesa, Miss Tirotta, Ms Kristina, Miss Maeva and Miss Iang for your wonderful efforts in creating such a special day on Wednesday. Congratulations to all of our Prep students!

Book Week in Week 6!

Book Week is fast approaching and will take place in Week 6 of this term. A reminder that the theme for Book Week is ‘Reading is Magic!’ Don’t forget to get organised with your costume: remember you can always get creative and use recycled materials to create your costume. We will hold our Book Week Parade at 9am on Tuesday the 20th August. Keep an eye out for next week’s newsletter to see what fun activities are planned for the week. More details to follow. Reading really is magical!

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to John (6: 24-35

Whoever comes to me will never be hungry; whoever believes in me will never thirst..

When the people saw that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into boats and crossed to Capernaum to look for Jesus. When they found him on the other side, they said to him, ‘Rabbi, when did you come here?’

 Jesus answered:

‘I tell you most solemnly, you are not looking for me

because you have seen the signs but because you had all the bread you wanted to eat.

Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life,

the kind of food the Son of Man is offering you, for on him the Father, God himself, has set his seal.’

Then they said to him, ‘What must we do if we are to do the works that God wants?’ Jesus gave them this answer, ‘This is working for God: you must believe in the one he has sent.’ So they said, ‘What sign will you give to show us that we should believe in you? What work will you do? Our fathers had manna to eat in the desert; as scripture says: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’

Jesus answered:

I tell you most solemnly, it was not Moses who gave you bread from heaven,

it is my Father who gives you the bread from heaven, the true bread;

for the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.’ ‘Sir,’ they said ‘give us that bread always.’

Jesus answered:

“I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never by hungry; he who believes in me will never thirst. “

This week’s gospel reading continues the exploration of John Ch 6 that began last week and will continue for another few weeks. Today’s passage begins the extended discourse on the ‘Bread of Life’ image that runs throughout this chapter. Last week’s reading finished with Jesus virtually fleeing the scene when the crowd wanted to make him king. At the start of today’s reading, the crowd has caught up with him again and appears to be looking for a repeat performance of the miraculous feeding. Jesus accuses them of simply wanting more food and not being alert to the truth of the sign they had witnessed. The crowd asks what they must do to accomplish the works of God and Jesus answers fairly bluntly, Believe in me!

In response, the people demand a sign from Jesus: produce manna from heaven as Moses did during the Exodus. In fact, manna from heaven is one of the signs of the coming of the Messiah that is foretold by the prophets. So, in their own way, the people are asking Jesus to demonstrate to them that he is the Messiah. Jesus, however, explains that it was not Moses who produced the manna, but God. In Jesus, God has already produced the sign – the Bread sent down from heaven. There is no need for Jesus to produce such a sign; the sign has already been produced by God. It is up to the people – and us – to recognise God’s gift of life-sustaining nourishment that is Jesus.

In the Eucharist, we continue to celebrate Jesus as the Bread of Life – the sustaining gift of God that ‘gives life to the world’.

Scriptural context – Bread that endures

Jesus says, ‘Do not work for food that cannot last, but work for food that endures to eternal life.’ The reference to food that cannot last relates to today’s first reading about manna. In the full account of Exodus 16 you will see that the manna that fell on the first five days had become rotten by the next day and could not be eaten. However, the manna that fell on the sixth day was ‘food that endures’ so that it could be eaten the next day – the Sabbath day, when the work of gathering the manna was not allowed.

Living the Gospel – The Body of Christ

Christ is present in the Eucharist in many forms: in the people gathered; in the celebrating priest; in the Word proclaimed; and in the consecrated bread and wine – the Body and Blood of Christ. In relation to receiving Christ through the reception of communion, St Augustine wrote, ‘Be what you see, and receive what you are.’ We not only receive the Body of Christ through Eucharist, we are called to be the Body of Christ because of what we have received; and we receive the Body of Christ because we are already part of the Body of Christ.

Historical Context – Bread

For thousands of years, bread has been a staple part of the human diet in many cultures. It is no accident that the image of Jesus as bread makes such a significant appearance in the gospel of John. For the Jews, like other Ancient Near Eastern cultures, bread was a vital mainstay of their diet. In the Bible, the word ‘bread’ often simply means all food – it was that important! For many, regular access to bread did equate to life. Bread also played a crucial role in religious practices, especially the Passover meal.

Uganda Child Sponsorship

A child from Uganda is waiting for someone like you to sponsor their education this year.

We currently have 278 active sponsors and are looking for another 20 people to sponsor a child. Please help us reach this target.

Please contact the Parish Office to obtain a sponsorship form. Thank you to everyone who has already generously sponsored a child.
