Acting Principals Letter

Dear Parents & Carers,

Winter is certainly upon us with the cooler weather making an appearance this week coinciding  with a large amount of unnamed Resurrection jackets, jumpers and beanies making their way to  the school office. Just a reminder to ensure that your child’s name is clearly labelled on all items of  clothing. Often, we find an article of clothing has a name but it is so faded it is hard to read and  therefore had to return to the owner.

First Holy Communion

Congratulations to the following Grade 4 students who

over the weekend celebrated their first Holy

Communion. “He who eats my flesh and drinks my

blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the Last

Day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink

indeed.” John: 54-55

I ask you all to keep in your prayers all the children who

made their First Holy Communion and pray that their

families will continue to gift them with a strong sense of

faith. To the First Communion parents, may God

continue to bless you in your role as parents and grant

you wisdom, patience and hope.

Prep 2025

Thank you to all current families who have completed an enrolment form for their child to start Prep  in 2025. To date, we have sent out 45 acceptance letters for Prep next year and are receiving more  enrolments daily. In an effort to ensure our current families do not miss out on a place for Prep 2025,  please make sure that you collect an enrolment form from the office staff and submit this along  with all other required paperwork as soon as possible.

If you have a child that will be 5s years of age by 30th April 2025, and you have not completed an  enrolment form, please contact the school office on 8312 6312 today. If you are unsure in regards  to your child’s school readiness, I encourage you to contact Mrs Veronica Kulkewycz, our Learning  Diversity Leader. Please note that there are some year levels that we are at capacity and unable  to accept any more enrolments.

Dance Battle and Crazy Hair Day

Congratulations to ALL our Grade 5’s for having participated in this year’s Dance Battle. It was fantastic to see the talent, expression, joy and energy you all displayed throughout your dances. A huge thank you to all our staff who also contributed to the success of this event through their  encouragement of students to participate, providing feedback on each dance performed and  even getting involved in the dance battle themselves.

A special mention to Ms Jody Banks, our incredible Performing Arts Specialist Teacher who  facilitated the dance battle, thank you as always for highlighting the importance of Performing Arts  in school. Lastly, congratulations to Grade 5A who won this year’s dance battle, I wonder who the  winner will be next year?

A huge thank you to all the students who participated in the dance battle by wearing crazy hair for  the day. As a school we were able to raise $290.20 which we will be going straight to the  Resurrection Parish’s Uganda sponsorship program. In raising $290.20 as a school we have been  able to sponsor 2 children's education for a year - what an incredible achievement! As a school we  are going to continue to focus on building our relationship with Resurrection Parish’s Uganda project  whilst highlighting our focus on Catholic social teachings. Look out for some exciting projects in the  pipeline for Term Three.

God Bless,

Reporting and Assessment Update

Operoo for Paper Report

In last week’s newsletter, we advised that this semester’s student reports will be made available  online through the parent portal on the last day of Term 2, Friday 28th June. This year we are  sending an Operoo for you to opt  in or out of a paper copy of your  child’s report. All families will be  able to access the online copy of  the report. This opt in/opt out  option is an opportunity for you to  let us know if you would like to  receive a paper copy as well as the digital copy that is available

online.

You will have, earlier this week,  received an email from no reply@nforma.com.au This provides you with all the necessary information and steps on how to  access the portal. Even with an existing account (which all parents now should have), you will  need to set a new password. In the event you have not received an email, please contact the  office to ensure your contact details are up to day. If you have misplaced your email, please visit:  https://parentgcr4.nforma.com.au/portal/#/login?schooldomain=rskingspark

● Your username is the email address you’ve supplied the school

● Use the temporary password from the email mentioned above

● The ‘Welcome Screen’ will appear

● You will be required to change your password

○ Enter the temporary password

○ Enter your new chosen password (NOTE: The password must be a minimum of 7  characters and contain at least one non-alphanumeric character (e.g. ! * - ) ○ Re-enter your password in the ‘Confirm Password’ section and click on ‘Change  Password’

● A successful message will appear if all the criteria was met for the new password.

To view the reports please follow these instructions:

1. At the main menu of the portal, select the child for the report that you would like to view. 2. Click on ‘Reports’.

3. Select the reporting period. Your chosen child’s report will appear.

It is very important that you have updated your email address(es) with the school, as an automated email containing instructions and login details has come from no reply@nforma.com.au not the school. Please ensure that you check your junk/spam folder for an  email from that address.

It is highly recommended that you use a computer to access your child’s reports for the first time.  Subsequent logins can be made on a mobile device if preferred.

Once you have followed the instructions, you will be able to view your child’s report online.

Once in the portal you will need to choose your child (if you have more than one at our school) and then choose the reporting component.

Forgotten passwords:

If you have forgotten your password, please follow the ‘forgotten password’ link. Please note that  your new password needs to be at least 7 characters long and must include at least one non  alpha-numeric character, e.g. *, - / or similar.

If you have requested a password reset and the email does not appear, please look in your  junk/spam folder for an email from no-reply@nforma.com.au

If you have any questions or issues, please contact the school office.

Keep a lookout for an Operoo form was sent on Wednesday 12th June. The form will be open for  one week, closing on Tuesday 18th June. The form indicates to us which families would like to  receive a paper copy of the report.

Thank you in advance for considering the paperless option to support our community initiative to  make small choices more often in order to become more sustainable!

Reporting Update: Mathematics 2.0

All schools in Victoria are currently either exploring or implementing the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 in  Mathematics, with a view for all Victorian schools to implement and assess against the newly  revised curriculum in the near future. Resurrection has been exploring the 2.0 version of the  curriculum since 2023 and we have implemented this fully over the course of this semester. As a  result of this implementation, there have been some changes to how Mathematics is being  reported this year.

Previously, there was a separate result for the strands of Number and Algebra, Measurement and  Geometry, Statistics and Probability (see image below).

One of the changes that you will notice in this semester’s report is that teachers have reported  against the curriculum as an entire subject area by providing one aggregated score. As a result of  this change, there will be no visible progression or comparison between the current and previous  reporting period. This will be only for the Semester 1 2024 reporting period.

At Resurrection, we are committed to providing you with information to support your understanding  of your child’s achievements, and this will be  provided through assessment against  indicators for the relevant strands taught and  assessed, as well as a personalised goal for your  child that has been created in response to their  achievements and areas for improvement in  the learning area of Mathematics. Our  detailed indicators will provide you with insight  on your child’s achievement in each of the five  or six strands of Number, Algebra,

Measurement, Space, Statistics & Probability  (commencing from Grade 3).

If you have any questions, please reach out to your child’s teacher, our Mathematics Leader  Michelle Widdison or myself. The upcoming Parent Teacher Conversations in Term 3 are a perfect  opportunity to discuss your child’s achievements and goals.

Term 3: Parent Teacher Conversations

Parent Teacher Conversations are due to be held on Tuesday 23rd (3:45pm - 7:15pm) and  Thursday 25th July (3:45pm - 7:15pm).

These face-to-face meetings are an important opportunity for you to meet with your child’s teacher  and discuss their progress in relation to the curriculum, the Semester One Report and future learning  directions.

Once you have made a booking, you will receive a confirmation email indicating the time and  date. Please keep this email in order to attend the meeting at your allocated time.

At the end of this newsletter is all the information you require for making a booking for the Parent  Teacher Conversations. Bookings are now open and will close on Monday 22nd July at 12:00pm

Please visit the following web address to make your booking:

https://www.schoolinterviews.com.au/code/yb7wg

Please note that interviews are for 15 minutes and spaces are limited. If you require more time with  a particular teacher, please arrange a separate meeting by contacting your child’s teacher  directly.

Wellbeing & Community

PBL UPDATE

As a part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Framework, students throughout the school  receive a PBL card from staff when they are showing they are being Respectful, Responsible and/or Resilient. These PBL cards are then able to be traded in to obtain a reward that ranges from  something small such as a Scratch and Sniff Sticker to something such as a Rare PBL Card.

Last week, William N from 1C decided to trade 100 of his PBL cards for a ‘limited edition’ PBL card!  This card is a unique collector’s item that shines and

glitters when held, letting everyone know that William is a  Respectful, Responsible and Resilient learner. Keep up the  amazing work William! Many of our students have now received enough PBL  cards to be traded in for rewards such as a movie  afternoon, a doughnut or even an icy pole!  The parents of students who would like to trade their  Semester 1 cards for these types of rewards will receive  an Operoo consent form in the coming weeks.

Who do I contact regarding my child’s diverse  learning or medical needs?

Learning Diversity

At times, our teachers may identify students requiring some additional support. Your child may  present with difficulties accessing and participating in education. In consultation with yourself, the  school may access the services of the following consultants and/or allied health professionals in  order to better inform the educational programming of your child:

psychologists

speech pathologists

learning consultants: diversity, autism spectrum disorder/behaviour, vision impairment, hearing  impairment, physical/chronic health impairment and new arrivals/refugees.

If the school believes your child would benefit from these services,

we will contact you and ask for your approval for the direct

involvement of learning diversity staff with your child.

However, there will be times when you will have your own

questions or concerns you may need to raise. The first person

should always be your child’s classroom teacher, however there

may be other times when your questions or concerns are more

suited to be directed to our Learning Diversity Leader - Mrs

Veronica Kulkewycz. Veronica can be contacted by calling the

school on 8312 6312 or by email.

 vkulkewycz@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au

Medical Needs

We have discovered that many of our students have either

had their medications changed, require new medical needs

or no longer require the assistance provided through first aid. For all medical requirements,  please contact the office either by:

Email – office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au

Mobile – 0498 989 398

Phone – 8312 6312

Last week we received the following email from one of our Prep parents. It is wonderful to hear  that our senior students are showing the school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience!

“I know as parents we are quick to contact you to complain or whinge about something we aren't happy  with, but not today. I wanted to share a heart-warming moment that happened after school yesterday  (Monday) that I believe needs to be

acknowledged.

As you are aware my daughter Olivia (Prep)  spoke at assembly about the visit from the fire fighters. As a biased mum, you could see how nervous she was but she was still amazing!

After the school bell rang and we were  making our way to the car park, Olivia's  "grade 5 buddy" Simone came running up to  us. She gave Olivia a big hug and told her  how amazing she was at assembly and how  proud of her she was. This had Olivia  grinning from ear to ear and was all we  heard about last night. The relationship between these 2 is  beautiful. If one gets an award, they high 5 each other in the school yard. Olivia really  looks up to Simone as a role model and Simone  never fails. Olivia is extremely lucky to not only have a buddy who actually cares about her, but goes out of  her way to support and encourage her. If there's a way Simone could be acknowledged for this, I would be extremely grateful. What a beautiful  young lady she is.

Thanks

SUNDAY GOSPEL

This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (4: 26 – 34)

The mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds, grows  into the biggest shrub of all.

Jesus said to the crowds, ‘This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man throws seed on the  land. Night and day, while he sleeps, when he is awake, the seed is sprouting and growing;  how, he does not know. Of its own accord the land produces first the shoot, then the ear, then  the full grain in the ear. And when the crop is ready, he loses no time; he starts to reap because  the harvest has come.’

He also said, ‘What can we say the kingdom of God is like? What parable can we find for it? It  is like a mustard seed which at the time of its sowing in the soil is the smallest of all the seeds on  earth; yet once it is sown it grows into the biggest shrub of them all and puts out big branches  so that the birds of the air can shelter in its shade.’

Using many parables like these, he spoke the word to them, so far as they were capable of  understanding it. He would not speak to them except in parables, but he explained everything  to his disciples when they were alone.

This week’s gospel is a wonderful example of the teaching style of Jesus. It even tells us that ‘he  would not speak to them except in parables’. Jesus used the parable form almost exclusively  to share his message. He used imagery that was familiar to his audience; parables about the  everyday life of a rural community: seeds, planting, growing, harvesting. The secret of Jesus’  parables, when we understand the cultural context, is that there was always a ‘twist in the tale’  – what is called a ‘discombobulating shift’ – that turns the expected outcome of the story on  its head.

This is nowhere more evident than in the image of the mustard seed. On the surface the  parable is about the kingdom of God starting from very small, humble beginnings and growing  into something great. However, immediately prior to this kingdom parable, Jesus has reminded  us that the community makes a living out of growing grain crops like wheat for bread, etc. His  parable about the mustard seed describes a tiny seed that grows into a great shrub ‘so that  the birds of the air can shelter in its shade’. A farming community that was growing grain crops  would be greatly alarmed at the thought of actually attracting birds to their fields or even  nearby. Jesus’ message about the kingdom of God is that it is actually disruptive and invasive.  The kingdom brings unrest and disquiet to the predictable. The kingdom of God is unsettling.  This is a much more challenging parable than it appears from a literal reading.

Gospel Reflection - The Kingdom of God

The references to the kingdom of God in the gospels always carry a paradox. It exists in the present, yet is something to be achieved  in the future. It is here, but not yet. If we live  ‘as if’ we are living in the kingdom here and now then we hasten its coming. The kingdom of God is not a place but a way in which the world operates. It is a kingdom that is ruled by justice and gives precedence to those who are regarded as nothing in the world. It  is a kingdom of promise and hope that  inspires and calls all people to more than  they currently are.

Scriptural context – Kingdom Parables

Jesus sought to describe the kingdom of God by comparison and analogy – ‘The kingdom of  God is like …’; ‘To what can we compare the kingdom of God?’ He never gave a lecture about  the kingdom, rather, he painted a picture in terms that were readily recognised by his audience  but forced them to think differently about the image he used. It forced them to think about  themselves and their world in a different way. Kingdom parables begin innocently enough with  a familiar image but very quickly shift to a challenge about the way we normally perceive things.  The kingdom is often portrayed as a contradiction.

Living the Gospel – Seed on the landr?

The first parable in the gospel passage describes the unerring work of the kingdom. It is like the  seed that almost magically transforms into a fully grown plant that may be harvested – apparently without any external forces. Of course, we know that plants need to be fed, watered,  weeded and nurtured to ensure their proper growth. However, the kingdom of God works in our  lives in a similar way – if we feed and nurture it, the kingdom will produce a great harvest. Even  if we don’t pay it attention, the kingdom is present and acting in our world.

Scriptural context – Mark’s Messiah

Throughout the Gospel of Mark, the author explores the question of who people believe Jesus to be. Whilst his disciples have a less than perfect understanding of the question, ‘Who do you say I am?’, those whose faith reveals the truth of Jesus are quickly sworn to secrecy. In today’s gospel, the misunderstanding of Jesus’ family and the misunderstanding of the Scribes show their incomplete grasp of who Jesus is. Whilst the language about Satan, evil and unclean spirits is unfamiliar language today, the gospel writer uses this imagery to further his point that Jesus is the Messiah, the one who saves the world.

Maltese Celebration of Our Lady of the Rosary

On Sunday 6th October 2024 at the 10:30 mass, the Maltese Community of Resurrection Parish  Kings Park will celebrate and honour Our Lady of the Rosary.

We are looking for children with a Maltese background to join us and learn some Maltese  traditional dancing to be performed on the day.

If you are interested or would like more information, please ring Jane on 0421 593 189

Many thanks

Resurrection Katari group

St Kateri is the patroness saint of the environment and ecology. The Resurrection  parish Kateri group have created a sustainable party tub where you can use  reusable items for parties instead of purchasing single use items. It's both a great  way to save money as well as saving our environment!

There are plates, bowls, cups, spoons, knives and forks that come in a big plastic  tub. There are about 100 of each item and can be borrowed from the Kateri  Resurrection Group.

All we ask is that once they are done with the party kit, it is washed, dried and counted for  completeness and returned. If anyone is interested in borrowing it for their next party, contact  Resurrection office office@rskingspark.catholic.edu.au and we will put you into contact with Mary  Anne from the Kateri group.
