Acting Principals Letter
Last weekend saw the first of our Grade Four students join the Resurrection Parish Masses for their First Holy Communion! When we come to receive the Eucharist, we need to tell ourselves that this truly is the Body and Blood of Christ and we are privileged to be able to partake. We need to let the presence of Christ fill our whole being. Jesus gives himself to us in the Eucharist as spiritual nourishment because he loves us. By eating the Body and drinking the Blood of Christ in the Eucharist, we become united to the person of Christ through his humanity. "Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him" (John 6:56). Congratulating the following students who have now joined the table of the Lord.
● Isla
● Parker
● Khristian
● Sally
● Michael
● Elizabeth
● Isabella
● Ajok
● Daphne
● Kayla
Please join me in praying for these students as well as those students still preparing to receive their First Holy Communion over the next few weekends during the Resurrection Parish Masses.
Thank you to Fr Gerard, Mrs Rachael Bonavia and Mrs Mel Apap (Parish secretaries) for your support and guidance as well as to Mrs Aclan (Religious Education Leader) and our Grade Fourteachers Mrs Enza La Rosa, Miss Natalie Donevska and Miss Brittany Davidson for your preparation of the Resurrection students.
School Closure Day - King's Birthday Monday 10th June.

Crazy Hair Fundraiser
On Wednesday the 12th of June we have our annual Grade 5 Dance Battle! On this day we are also having a crazy hair fundraiser with 25% of our fundraising going to Uganda Child Sponsorship.
Students are encouraged to have their craziest hair possible and to bring along a gold coin.
Here are some examples of crazy hair!
School is better when your child is here!
We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.
Did you know that…
God Bless,
Acting Principal
Deputy Principal Learning & Organisation
Reporting time is near!
As we know at this point in the school year, our teachers are working hard to finalise our student reports. The student reports will be made available online through the online portal on the last day of Term 2, Friday 28th June. We will send out details on how to access this in the coming weeks, closer to school reports being made available.
This year we are sending an Operoo for you to opt in or out of a paper copy of your child’s report. All families will be able to access the online copy of the report. This opt in/opt out option is an opportunity for you to let us know if you would like to receive a paper copy as well as the digital copy that is available online.
Our school has been looking at ways we can be more sustainable and one of those ways is to reduce the amount of paper that is used and distributed at school. A perfect example of this is reducing the amount of weekly newsletters that are distributed in the school. Last year we reduced the amount of newsletter copies from 350 down to 140 across the school! This has, of course, made a significant difference in the amount of paper being used at school.
Keep a lookout for an Operoo form that will be sent by Wednesday 12th June. The form will be open for one week, closing on Tuesday 18th June. The form will indicate to us which families would like to receive a paper copy of the report.
Reading, Reading Logs & Diaries
We know that reading is a crucial skill that helps us with all other learning! Our strongest recommendation to support learning at home is to encourage your child to read. Reading is so important for many reasons; it aids in language development, significantly increases vocabulary and promotes brain development in particular in providing opportunities to make connections between ideas and experiences. Shared reading at home can also be a fantastic way to spend time together as a family! Here is an infographic showing the benefits of reading in terms of vocabulary exposure and links to higher achievement in testing performance.
We do ask that children are practicing reading, either aloud or independently at home each night. All students either have a reading log that is sent home with take home readers, or a student diary where they are asked to record their reading and have this signed by an adult at home each night. We would love your continued support in encouraging this practice at home.
It is also beneficial to ask questions about what your child is reading, before, during and after reading. Below are some examples of questions you could ask your child when they are reading!
Before
Do you think this is a fiction or nonfiction text? Why?
Based on the title or book cover, what problems do you think the main characters might face?
What are some possible solutions?
What clues has the author provided for you in the title and illustrations?
What are you wondering about?
During
Is there anything that you don’t understand that we should go back and reread?
What illustration do you think will be on the next page? Why?
What details have been important to the story so far?
How do you think this text will end? Why?
After
What do you think the author wanted you to learn from this text?
If the author wrote a sequel to this text, what do you think the sequel would be about?
Summarise what you have read in 2-4 sentences. Include the who, what, when, where and why!
Is there anything from the text that didn’t make sense to you?
What would you have done differently from the main character?
Think about an unusual detail in the text. Why do you think the author included it?

This year's Grade 5 'Dance Battle' performance featuring all students in 5A, 5B & 5C will be held next Wednesday the 12th of June in the school hall. Parents are most welcome to attend the event and cheer on the Grade 5 students! Some of our younger students will be dancing on the stage as well, showing the audience their best freestyle dance moves! Please note that no filming or photography of the event is permitted. The school will be taking some photos of the event using the school camera to share with families in the newsletter and on Seesaw.
On the day, Grade 5 students are asked to bring to school a colourful t-shirt, long pants (comfortable for dancing) and runners to change into just before the performance begins.
The Dance Battle will be held in the school hall from 12.15pm-1.15pm and will be judged by using an 'applause meter' app which measures the volume of an audience's applause after a performance. The winning class will be announced at the end of all of the performances, with the winning class receiving a trophy to display in their classroom!!!

District Soccer Tournament
On Thursday the 30th of May, the Grade 6 boys ventured off to Taylors Hill Recreational Reserve to participate in the Boys District Soccer Tournament.
The twelve boys had their first game against Kings Park Primary School, the boys were triumphant with 3-0 victory.
In their 2nd game the boys played last year's champions, Kororoit Creek Primary School and managed to pull off an upset 2-0 victory. In the third and final group game we were held to a 0-0 draw with Cairnlea Park Primary School. That draw was enough to push us to the top of Group B, meaning we had qualified for the Grand Final against Group A winners (and also undefeated) Deer Park North Primary.
The Grand Final was a tough tussle with chances for both sides. But once the full time whistle had blown the score was 0-0 and we went to a penalty shootout. With the entire tournament watching, the boys won the tense shootout 4-3. The next stop for the boys is the Regional Tournament, going up against soccer champions from different regions.
As well as playing superbly throughout the tournament, the boys also represented the school terrifically, upholding the school P.B.L values, Respect, Resilience and Responsibility. A big thank you to Ms Paola, Ms Jen and the organisers who helped set up the day.

Grade 6 Soccer Coach
SUNDAY GOSPEL
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 3:20-35
It is the end of Satan.
Jesus went home with his disciples, and such a crowd collected that they could not even have a meal. When his relatives heard of this, they set out to take charge of him, convinced he was out of his mind.
The scribes who had come down from Jerusalem were saying, ‘Beelzebul is in him,’ and, ‘It is through the prince of devils that he casts devils out.’ So he called them to him and spoke to them in parables, ‘How can Satan cast out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot last. And if a household is divided against itself, that household can never stand. Now if Satan has rebelled against himself and is divided, he cannot stand either - it is the end of him. But no one can make his way into a strong man’s house and burgle his property unless he has tied up the strong man first. Only then can he burgle his house.
‘I tell you solemnly, all men’s sins will be forgiven, and all their blasphemies; but let anyone blaspheme against the Holy Spirit and he will never have forgiveness: he is guilty of an eternal sin.’ This was because they were saying, ‘An unclean spirit is in him.’
His mother and brothers now arrived and, standing outside, sent in a message asking for him. A crowd was sitting round him at the time the message was passed to him, ‘Your mother and brothers and sisters are outside asking for you.’ He replied, ‘Who are my mother and my brothers?’ And looking round at those sitting in a circle about him, he said, ‘Here are my mother and my brothers. Anyone who does the will of God, that person is my brother and sister and mother.’
Gospel Reflection - Proclaim the good news
Family members are often the last ones to allow us to change from who we have been to who we want to become. Unintentionally, family will sometimes continue to treat us as the child we were growing up in the family environment, despite our various accomplishments and changes in direction. Sometimes it’s easier to continue to treat someone we love as we have always treated them, rather than learning to adjust and accommodate a new way of relating. When you’re the one seeking to establish a new life or a new way of operating, family can appear to be ‘keeping you in a box’.
In a style typical of the Gospel of Mark, the two incidents with Jesus’ family ‘sandwich’ and focus attention on the interaction with the Scribes who accuse Jesus of being under the influence of Satan. Like the family of Jesus who don’t want to see him for who he really is becoming, or has become, the Scribes misunderstand Jesus’ fight against evil. Jesus dismisses their claims through his use of the image of binding the strong man before entering the strong man’s house. Jesus has ‘bound’ Satan – the strong man – proving himself the stronger and has set about undoing the work of evil in the world.
Today’s gospel paints a picture of Jesus’ family wanting him to play safe and remain the person they’ve known him to be, rather than growing into his ministry and preaching his challenging message. They can see that his actions are causing the authorities to pay attention and their reaction is to try to get Jesus to stay under the radar; to live small.
Gospel Focus – Binding the strong man
The incarnation of Jesus in the world – God becoming fully human and physically present in the world – was an act of supreme love for the world. The image of binding the strong man echoes this act of love. The image is reminiscent of a bully or tyrant who is wreaking havoc and terrorising a community. Before justice can be restored and the victims/survivors lifted up, the ‘strong man’ must be restrained and subdued. To bring about the loving act of God in the world, the power of evil must be resisted and bound up.
Living the Gospel – Who is my mother or brother?
At the end of the today’s gospel passage, Jesus states, ‘Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.’ Family bonds were critically important in First Century Palestine. Jesus does not deny his family kinship, but expands it to include anyone who does the will of God. All those who work to bring about the Kingdom or Reign of God share a bond with Jesus, they share a familial link with him. Whenever we act to bring about God’s dream for this world, we join our efforts with those of our brother, Jesus.
Scriptural context – Mark’s Messiah
Throughout the Gospel of Mark, the author explores the question of who people believe Jesus to be. Whilst his disciples have a less than perfect understanding of the question, ‘Who do you say I am?’, those whose faith reveals the truth of Jesus are quickly sworn to secrecy. In today’s gospel, the misunderstanding of Jesus’ family and the misunderstanding of the Scribes show their incomplete grasp of who Jesus is. Whilst the language about Satan, evil and unclean spirits is unfamiliar language today, the gospel writer uses this imagery to further his point that Jesus is the Messiah, the one who saves the world.
