Dear parents/carers,

Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday and a blessed Easter.  Once again, I have added a copy of our parish Easter celebrations. You are warmly invited to attend and to experience this journey with your children and family.

My prayer for our community is that the power of the resurrection of Jesus Christ fills all of our hearts with hope and purpose and that we understand that the miracle of Easter is a testament to God's love and power. I pray that we all experience this mighty love in our lives, especially the children at our wonderful school.

Today your children participated in a day of reflection around the Easter journey and what this journey means in their lives.

We look forward to welcoming your children back to school for the beginning of Term 2 on Monday April 15.

PBL

Positive Behaviour for Learning

At Resurrection Catholic Primary School, we follow the Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) Model. PBL is a Whole School Framework that promotes positive behaviour across the school as it helps to develop safe and supportive learning environments.

PBL is characterised by an emphasis on prevention and a provision of basic proactive programming for all students by all staff in all settings. This approach ensures all students receive the appropriate level of support to help them to be successful at school. Student outcomes are monitored so identified students can receive additional support when needed, and a minority of students can access intensive support to enable them to engage successfully in learning.

PBL Values

The PBL values at Resurrection Catholic Primary school are Respectful, Responsible and Resilient. It is expected that all members of the Resurrection community follow the PBL Matrix which outlines the values and expectations for all students and staff. These values along with the expected behaviours are to be explicitly taught to establish clear and consistent boundaries.

The Resurrection Behaviour Flow Chart is used to support staff and students in understanding the process to follow when managing student behaviours. The flow chart explains in a step-by-step manner how to follow through with minor and major. All major behaviours are reported to and dealt with a member of the Leadership team. All minor behaviours are managed and dealt with by the staff who comes across the concerning behaviour.

You may have heard your child/ren sharing

that they were given a PBL card at school and may be wondering what it is all about!

The PBL cards are a way of the staff identifying and acknowledging students who are showing that they are being Respectful, Responsible or Resilient learners and how they are showing these values.

The following examples are some of the reasons that students might have earnt a PBL card.

  1. A student who is moving safely out of the learning space and onto the oval by walking could be given a card for being a Responsible learner.

  2. A student who is keeping their hands and feet to themselves could be given a card for being a Respectful learner.

  3. When faced with a learning task that seems challenging, a student who persists and challenges themself may be given a card for being a Resilient learner.

You may be thinking what do the students do with all these cards?

Well, they are able to trade them in for a reward. The reward chart is shown below, please note that it is still in draft form as next term the students and staff will be evaluating the incentives.

Last week some of our Grade One students traded in 10 of their PBL cards for a scratch and sniff sticker!

A HUGE thank you to Christine C, Wendy H and Katrina M for volunteering their time to put together the hot cross bun orders and packaged up all 38 Easter Hampers!

A special thanks to Christine C and Amanda A for their tireless efforts in organising some fantastic vouchers to be included in the Easter Hampers.

I’m very pleased to share with you that we raised a total of $1,494 for our Fundraising efforts in Term One. The school will donate $373.50 to Caritas as part of our fundraising for Project Compassion.

We remember, we celebrate, we believe

We are currently in Holy Week, an important week in our faith in which we recall the events that led to the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus. This morning, the whole school gathered to remember these events. Led by our Year 5 students, we recalled the events of Palm Sunday, Holy Thursday and the passion of Christ through the Stations of the Cross. I would like to extend my gratitude to our Year 5 students for all their preparations in presenting a meaningful play, and for leading our school reverently into deep reflection this morning.

When we arrive back from the holidays in Term 2, we will be well into the celebration of Easter, a season which actually spans 7 weeks! Being our namesake, celebrations for our feast day have been planned the first Friday back to school with a range of fun activities planned for our students. Families are invited to celebrate with us too! Please view the event details below on our flyer and in the Operoo sent to all families this week!

Congratulations to Riley in Grade 3 who has successfully completed Level 3 in swimming in a short period of time and has quickly moved up to Level 4.

Congratulations to Keiara in Grade 5A on her recent Taekwondo achievement. Over the weekend she competed in her sixth Victorian Selection Competition and was crowned Victorian State Champion for her age and weight division! Next step is, Taekwondo Nationals where she will be representing Victoria towards the end of the year!

Grade 6 Camp Reflection

On Wednesday at 12 PM the year 6’s arrived at PGL Campaspe Downs in Kyneton. We had completed many activities which really entertained all the students and were a highlight at camp!

Once we settled down, we headed to the barn hall and ate our packed lunch, and got onto the activities straight away. My first activity was the flying fox where we ziplined across a lake. It was so much fun I went twice. Then afterwards we headed straight to rock climbing where we climbed on a tall wall and tried to make it to the top. I didn't make it but I still enjoyed it.

When we woke up on the 2nd day, we got ready and went to the dining hall for lunch, our breakfast was pancakes toast and preserve (like jam). It was delicious and I ate it all. Then afterwards I went to a raft building where we had to build a raft that would float on the lake. Our raft unfortunately sank and we fell deep into the water but it was still very refreshing. Then we did bushcraft where we built our very own tent to survive in. It was tough but I think I did a great job!

Once those activities were done, we ate lunch which was a chicken wrap, I think it was one of the best camp meals I've had in a while. But we had to move on to the next activity which was a challenge course. We completed a number of challenges and then ate dinner. We ate honey soy chicken for dinner and did some night time activities to end the night.

On the last day of camp, we quickly chewed on scrambled eggs and toast and had to finish the last activities before we left. The first activity was a sensory trail where we did an obstacle course blindfolded. I found it very easy and we then did laser tag where we lost by 3 rounds which was really sad but I loved the action games. Then our final activity came and we did this activity called leap of faith where we climb on a steep pillar and jump off. At first, I was scared but once I did it I was sad it was over, once it ended we unfortunately went home.

Overall camp was such an amazing experience which gave me an opportunity to try new things. It was so memorable and I really enjoyed my last camp at Resurrection!

UKULELE FUN!

In Performing Arts lessons this term, Grades 3-6 students have been learning how to play the ukulele. Students have learnt how to hold the instrument correctly, play with a plectrum, play individual strings, strumming patterns and even some basic chords!

On Fridays during playtime, students from across the school have had the opportunity to come into the Performing Arts room and have a play on the ukuleles as well. Many of our younger students have enjoyed having a go at making some music on these wonderful instruments and it has been fantastic to see some of our older students teaching the younger ones how to play!

Keep up the fabulous music-making, everyone!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 16: 1 - 7

Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified, has risen.

When the sabbath was over, Mary of Magdala, Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices with which to go and anoint him. And very early in the morning on the first day of the week they went to the tomb, just as the sun was rising.

They had been saying to one another, ‘Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?’ But when they looked they could see that the stone – which was very big – had already been rolled back. On entering the tomb they saw a young man in a white robe seated on the right hand side, and they were struck with amazement. But he said to them, ‘There is no need for alarm. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified: he has risen, he is not here. See, here is the place where they laid him. But you must go and tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going before you to Galilee; it is there you will see him, just as he told you.”’

Gospel Reflection

On this, the most important celebration in the Christian calendar, it is a shame that the reading chosen for the Lectionary is something of a let down. Certainly, within the gospel reading we have the discovery of the empty tomb by Mary of Magdala; the disbelieving disciples running to find things exactly as Mary had described; and the dawning realisation of what Jesus had meant when he so frequently spoke about rising from the dead. However, if the editors of the Lectionary had chosen to also include the next nine verses of the gospel we would have also heard the magnificent encounter between Mary and the risen Lord, confirming that it was a woman, Mary Magdala, who was the first witness to Christ’s resurrection. As it is, we never hear this account as part of the cycle of Sunday readings.

The discovery of the empty tomb – although so simply told – is an astounding event that completes the Paschal Mystery: the passion, death AND resurrection of Jesus. Whilst Christ’s willingness to go to his death on the cross was an extraordinary statement of God’s love for humankind, it is his rising again from death that offers all Christian people hope. It is the second disciple – the one whom Jesus loved – who is the first to grasp the meaning of what has happened inside the tomb. The gospel tells us that upon entering the tomb and seeing Jesus’ burial cloths lying there, ‘he saw and he believed’. Unlike the later encounters with the risen Lord, this disciple recognised the truth and significance of what he saw in the empty tomb. He didn’t need to see the risen Lord to believe. Perhaps it is he that we today can best identify with. Not in a position to physically encounter the risen Christ, we are capable of seeing the signs of his resurrection and continuing presence in the world and choose to believe.

Historical Context -  Mary Magdalene

Mary Magdalene, or Mary of Magdala, plays an important role in the gospel accounts of the resurrection. She was obviously a significant follower of Jesus, being named as a witness to the crucifixion, discovering the empty tomb and the first to encounter the risen Christ. One would think that she would hold a prestigious place in the Church, but for many years she was confused with another character identified in the gospels and was portrayed as a prostitute and sinner. Mary is named in each of the four gospels and not once is it indicated that she was a sinner or prostitute. She has been a victim of mistaken identity for 2000 years.

Gospel Focus – The disciple Jesus loved

In this week’s gospel we see reference to a disciple as ‘the one Jesus loved’. It is generally agreed that this disciple is John. There is some suggestion that the disciple, John, is in fact the John ascribed as the author of this gospel. If this is so, to describe himself as the disciple Jesus loved is merely a means of avoiding using a personal pronoun – I or me. Just as Jesus described himself as ‘the Son of God’ or ‘the Son of Man’ rather than say ‘I’, John uses the same convention to avoid naming himself. It is not to suggest that Jesus didn’t love his other disciples.

Different View – An empty tomb?

There are some writers who have questioned the historical accuracy of the empty tomb account of the resurrection. Some theologians and biblical scholars (e.g., members of the ‘Jesus Seminar’) argue that historically, it is far more likely that the victim of Roman crucifixion would be left to rot on the cross or buried in a shallow criminal’s grave – not laid to rest in an expensive private tomb. However, they do not argue against resurrection. They maintain that Jesus’ body was not ‘resuscitated’ or ‘reanimated’. What happened to his corpse, they argue, is irrelevant to Christ’s resurrection.
