Dear parents/carers,

Term One is quickly drawing towards an end and it has been a pleasure to settle into this wonderful school community.

Easter is the most important liturgical time for us;  where we celebrate Jesus's victory over sin and death and salvation for mankind. For our students it is a wonderful opportunity  for them to be reminded of Jesus’ love for them.

Attached below is the Easter Journey times of our Parish. It would be wonderful if your families could attend some of these celebrations to strengthen what they are being taught at school.

Adrian Glasby

Principal

We are looking for parent helpers to assist next Monday (25th)

  1. Putting together Easter Hamper on Monday from 9.00am

  2. Organising Hot Cross buns to be distributed to students at 2.00pm

Well, done to our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students who took part in the NAPLAN assessments over Weeks 7 and 8. NAPLAN is a nationwide assessment that was introduced in 2008 for students in Grade 3, 5, 7 and 9 to measure progress of skill development and understanding in reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation and mathematics. NAPLAN isn't a pass/fail test but rather illustrates student performance nationwide, allowing them to demonstrate skill development in Literacy and Numeracy over time.

Our teachers did a fantastic job in administering the tests and supporting our students. They helped in reducing nerves through their care and commitment to supporting our students in their learning journey. Once the results are received later in the year, the staff will work together to analyse the data, celebrate our successes, look for areas for improvement, and reflect on how we can improve our programs.

I’d love to acknowledge our Grade 3 and Grade 5 students for their positivity, resilience and perseverance when engaging in these tests. Please remember, NAPLAN is only one form of assessment that schools use to measure student progress and growth and that we use a range of data and research to inform our practice. As I have mentioned previously, NAPLAN does not measure all of the important strengths that our students possess. We are so proud of the creativity, kindness and commitment to learning that we see each and every day. Well done to our wonderful students!

Catholic Education Week

Student Leader Reflections

First, we got a taxi and it took us to St. Patrick's Cathedral. When we got there, we entered the Cathedral and can I just say there was A LOT of schools there. Mr Glasby told us every school in Melbourne came! Me and Angelo held up our school banner! Overall, it was really fun.

When we finished Mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral, we walked to Treasury Gardens. There was a big line of people going to the park so we just followed them. We arrived about 5 minutes later to the park and Essa & I saw the concert. We didn't mind it but when we heard TAYLOR SWIFT music, we ran down the hill and sung from the top of our lungs! Then we had a picnic and we ate our lunch. Overall, it was really fun. We all loved our experience for Catholic education week!

Chris Q

(Faith & Life Captain)

Firstly, when we arrived at school we were with Mr Glasby & Mrs Davis waiting at the office then we headed to the front of the school and waited for our taxi to arrive!

We went to St. Patrick's Cathedral and it took us about one hour to get there and we fortunately arrived early so we got to pick our seats not too far from the altar. We took our seats while Angelo and Chris processed to the altar with our wonderful school banner and the other schools! Some schools were actually celebrating their one hundredth year of being a Catholic school - Isn't that amazing?

When all the schools took their banners up, we started the Mass and the Gospel was Luke 10: 1-12,17-20 Your peace will rest on a man. After that we listened to the homily and so on, then we sang the closing song which was Bring Forth to the Kingdom. Then we walked to Treasury Gardens and we went to celebrate!

Essa C

(Pedro House Captain)

After we had our Mass at the wonderful St. Patrick's Cathedral, we headed to Treasury Gardens. We did a bunch of activities but the one that was my favourite was soccer. At soccer we met a lot of kids from different

schools that we played with. I played one round and I played as a goalkeeper. I saved a decent amount of goals, but we did have to wait one whole hour to get a spot but it was still so fun. I loved our excursion for Catholic education week.

Angelo M

(Social Justice Leader)

Angelo, Essa, Chris & I went to St Patrick's Cathedral for Catholic Education Week. We left at 8:30am in a taxi. Once we arrived, we went into church for St Patrick's mass. After Mass, we walked down the road to the park called Treasury Gardens. We ate our lunch and went to play activities.

We went to the tug of war where we won lots of times but my hand really hurt after. We then went to the soccer activity. We played soccer and it took 30 minutes to get to play as goalkeeper vs Holy Eucharist St Albans. We walked down to the concert and listened to some music from 3 different colleges. My favourite was the Caroline Chisholm Band. Overall, I loved participating in Catholic Education week.

Run For The Kids

Last weekend I took part in my first ever fun run, the Run For The Kids. The run began in Docklands and took all the runners onto the Citylink and across the Bolte Bridge, before travelling down towards South Wharf and ending in Docklands, a 5km trip in total.

The hardest part of the run was climbing the bridge as it has quite the incline, but you are greeted with amazing views of the city at the top. No time to stop though! As we were only halfway there!

It was truly amazing seeing so many people, young and old, running and walking for a fantastic cause, as all donations went straight to the Royal Children’s Hospital. Resurrection has a great partnership with the Royal Children’s and we have some amazing families at our school who have seen the fantastic work they do first hand!

Through friends, family and staff, I was able to raise $637 for the run, and a great feeling of accomplishment, completing my first ever fun run. It was an amazing day and I look forward to completing more fun runs throughout the year!

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark 14: 1 - 47

The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ

First thing in the morning, the chief priests together with the elders and the scribes, in short the whole Sanhedrin, had their plan ready. They had Jesus bound and took him away and handed him over to Pilate.

Pilate questioned him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’ ‘It is you who say it’ he answered. And the chief priests brought many accusations against him. Pilate questioned him again, ‘Have you no reply at all? See how many accusations they are bringing against you!’ But to Pilate’s amazement, Jesus made no further reply.

At festival time Pilate used to release a prisoner for them, anyone they asked for. Now a man called Barabbas was then in prison with the rioters who had committed murder during the uprising. When the crowd went up and began to ask Pilate the customary favour, Pilate answered them, ‘Do you want me to release for you the king of the Jews?’ For he realised it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed Jesus over. The chief priests, however, had incited the crowd to demand that he should release Barabbas for them instead. The Pilate spoke again. ‘But in that case,’ he said to them ‘what am I to do with the man you call king of the Jews?’ They shouted back, ‘Crucify him!’ ‘Why?’ Pilate asked them ‘What harm has he done?’ But they shouted all the louder, ‘Crucify him!’ So Pilate, anxious to placate the crowd, released Barabbas for them and, having ordered Jesus to be scourged, handed him over to be crucified.

The soldiers led him away to the inner part of the palace, that is, the Praetorium, and called the whole cohort together. They dressed him in purple, twisted some thorns into a crown and put it on him. And they began saluting him, ‘Hail, king of the Jews!’ They struck his head with a reed and spat on him; and they went down on their knees to do him homage. And when they had finished making fun of him, they took off the purple and dressed him in his own clothes.

They led him out to crucify him. They enlisted a passer-by, Simon of Cyrene, father of Alexander and Rufus, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha, which means the place of the skull.

They offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he refused it. Then they crucified him, and shared out his clothing, casting lots to decide what each should get. It was the third hour when they crucified him. The inscription giving the charge against him read: ‘The King of the Jews.’ And they crucified two robbers with him, one on his right and one on his left.

The passers-by jeered at him; they shook their heads and said, ‘Aha! So you would destroy the Temple and rebuild it in three days! Then save yourself: come down from the cross!’ The chief priests and the scribes mocked him among themselves in the same way. ‘He saved others,’ they said ‘he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down from the cross now, for us to see it and believe.’ Even those who were crucified with him taunted him.

When the sixth hour came there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, ‘Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?’ which means, ‘My God, my God, why have you deserted me?’ When some of those who stood by heard this they said, ‘Listen, he is calling on Elijah’. Someone ran and soaked a sponge in vinegar and, putting it on a reed, gave it him to drink saying, ‘Wait and see if Elijah will come to take him down.’ But Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

And the veil of the Temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The centurion, who was standing in front of him, had seen how he had died, and he said, ‘In truth this man was a son of God.’

Gospel Reflection

By the time the gospel accounts came to be written, it was more than 35 years after the death of Jesus. The Gospel of Mark is now very widely held to have been the first of the four gospels, written in about the year 70 CE. One of the reasons for the writing of the gospels was the fact that those who had walked and talked with Jesus were becoming old and dying. There was a sense of capturing the story before the last eye witnesses were gone. This is very evident in the Passion narrative from the gospel of Mark. One can almost hear an elderly voice dictating the events: ‘then this happened …; then he said …; then we all thought …’ Like so much of this particular gospel, there is very little embellishment. It’s like an old time detective show, ‘Just give us the facts!’ The gospel of Mark presents the story of the Passion as a sequence of events with little commentary or theological reflection. (That is partly why it lends itself so well to being read by several voices.)

One of the best examples that the gospel is a straightforward recollection of events is the inclusion of the scene in Gethsemane when the young man ran away naked. No storyteller would create such a bizarre, unexplained event. There is no explanation of who the young man is, why he was wearing only a loincloth, nor why the armed men tried to seize hold of him. It is reported in exactly the same style as the rest of the story – very matter-of-fact. The presence of the young man – both in Gethsemane and in the gospel – has puzzled scholars for many years, yet if nothing else, it provides evidence of the way in which this Passion narrative was transmitted from lived experience, to memory, to oral account, to written gospel.

The Man was a son of God

By the time we have stood and listened to this lengthy Passion narrative, the listener may have started to wilt by the time we get to the death of Jesus. Yet the gospel writer keeps one of the most important messages for this moment. As Jesus dies, a centurion standing by utters the inspired words, ‘In truth, this man was a son of God.’ Famously played by John Wayne in the movie, The Greatest Story Ever Told, the centurion is the voice of the gentile – the non-Jew – representing all those throughout the world who will recognise the truth of Jesus’ life and purpose.

Have you thought? Passion of the Passion

The Passion narrative is very aptly named. The emotion and power of this story is nothing short of passionate. The gospel writer’s style of fast paced, unadorned factual narrative is a very effective way of helping the reader/listener to engage in the story. It is, after all, the first half of the most important Christian story – finished off by the resurrection that is celebrated on Easter Sunday. It is easy to see why this stark, narrative style was embellished and expanded upon by the later gospel writers and yet it is perhaps the more passionate for the lack of explanation and theologising.

Living the Gospel - Before the cock crows

Peter is an interesting character in the gospels. He is one of the first of the disciples to be called; Jesus changes his name and places great trust in him; he is witness to the most significant moments of Jesus’ life; he is able to profess his faith in Jesus as the Christ and yet it is he who denies even knowing Jesus. We might have thought that Peter was Jesus’ most loyal and faithful follower, yet it is he who can’t stand up and claim that he was a follower of Jesus. Is it any wonder that it is difficult for us today sometimes?
