Dear Parents, Students & Friends,
Who would believe that we find ourselves in September? The warmer weather of late is a sign that spring is indeed on its way and with it we can reflect on all that has been achieved and will continue to be achieved at Resurrection primary school.
Confirmation
Last Sunday I had the pleasure of attending the first two of our Parish and School Confirmation Masses. Thank you to Bishop Martin Ashe, along with Fr Gerard, who celebrated the final Sacrament of Initiation with our students, their sponsors and family members.
“Make sure you let God’s grace work in your souls by accepting whatever he gives you, and giving him whatever he takes from you. True holiness consists in doing God’s will with a smile. Give yourself truly to God. He will use you to accomplish great things as long as you believe much more in his love than in your own weakness.” - Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
Our Confirmation candidates affirmed their Baptismal promises and were sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. Bishop Martin spoke to the newly confirmed about how they have now been given the opportunity to use the gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord to be the face of Christ to all they encounter.
I ask you to pray for these students and their families as they continue their faith journey.
Thank you to Mrs Aclan and our Grade Six teachers for preparing our Confirmation candidates and supporting their faith journey.
Grade 4 Camp
Earlier this week our Grade 4 students attended Camp Wyuna in Queenscliff where they got the opportunity to learn more about the different sea life that live in Port Philip Bay. This was a wonderful opportunity for these students to find out more about the different habitats of marine life, something that they will be learning about in their current unit of Inquiry.
The Grade Four students need to be commended for representing Resurrection so well and living our PBL values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility while on camp. Personally, the highlight for me was the cruise seeing all the seals basking in the spring sun!
Thank you to Thomas Pham, Brittany Davidson, Lavina Stewart, Zina Costa, Jolene Major, Helen Frigo, Joss Coaley and Matt Galea who took time away from their loved ones to attend Grade Four camp.
School Review
As many of you are aware, Resurrection Primary School is current undergoing our four-year school review process. I am pleased to share that our school reviewer, Dr Judi Gurvich, attended onsite last week and we have meet all of the VRQA (Victorian Register School Board) and Child safety requirements. Next week Judi will be onsite on Wednesday and Thursday to meet with staff, students, parents and Fr Gerard to plan our strategic goals for the next four years.
Father’s Day Celebrations
This morning we had a wonderful celebration with our Resurrection fathers and father like figures.
Thank you to all the special visitors who were able to attend, enjoy a coffee and egg & bacon roll and some games and activities with their children.
I must thank our incredible admin team of Ruth Galea, Rachael Bonavia and Anna Attard for their planning and preparation of the morning.
To all our Resurrection dads, grandpas, uncles and special friends, I hope that you all have a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday and may you be recognised for all you do not just on Sunday but each and every day
God bless,
Jess Davis
Acting Principal
Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools Improvement Survey (MACSIS)
The survey has been sent to all families via email and will be open till Friday 15 September 2023.
One of the main goals of the school improvement survey is to identify the strengths and areas for improvement for Resurrection.
MACSSIS data benefits everyone within our school and provides valuable community insights into areas that our school can focus on.
It is essential that our school families have a voice and contribute to shaping of the ongoing improvement of this beautiful school.
For families with more than one child at Resurrection, we ask that you focus on your eldest child when completing the survey. Please know that participation is completely voluntary, but by not completing the survey, you don’t get the opportunity to influence its future, nor its development and improvement.
There are no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ answers – all responses are completely anonymous and at no point are any of the responses from students, families or staff identifiable by the school.
The survey is available in English, Arabic, Assyrian, Chaldean, simplified and traditional Chinese, Dinka, Falam, Hakha Chin, Karen, Tagalog, Vietnamese and Zomi.
We would really appreciate your input.
Kind Regards,
Mr John Hien

Firefighter Visit
This term, the Preps have been learning about community helpers and how they keep our community safe. To wrap up the unit, we were so lucky to welcome local Firefighters to our school. During the visit, the Firefighters talked to our Preps about fire safety. They explained how to stay safe if there's a fire and how important it is to work together to keep our community safe. Our Preps got to explore a fire truck up close and even got to try using a real fire hose.
Chicken Eggs
The Preps have now started their new unit of inquiry, exploring living and non-living things. This week, we had a special delivery from Henny Penny. Over the next two weeks, the Preps will be looking after the chicken eggs, watching them hatch and observing the little chicks grow. They will be feeding them and making sure they have enough water each day. Every day, they will be learning new things about chickens and recording information in their Chicken Journals. The Preps are so excited to watch these little chicks grow over the next two weeks.
We have set up a private livestream in case you're interested in checking on them after school. There's a chance you might get to see one hatch! Scan the QR code to check it out.
Stories in the New Testament
At the end of our current Religion unit on the Stories in the New Testament, the Year 4 students read, explored, researched and then completed journal entries from the perspective of a person from a New Testament story. Students reflected on how their lives changed as a result of meeting Jesus.
15 August 28AD
Dear Journal,
Jesus finally came! It has been 4 days since Lazarus has died. I didn’t understand what he meant by your brother will rise again but I found out later and you wouldn’t believe it! A while after Jesus arrived we went to Lazarus tomb and Jesus spoke to God and said, Father I know you always hear me. When we opened the tomb Jesus called Lazarus name and he told him to come out. Right after Jesus said that Lazarus was there! Martha and I were so happy. We hugged him and cried happy tears. What an amazing miracle!

Dear Diary,
I am a sinful man. The people hate me and my family too. One foggy night I went out to fish to pay my taxes. That night we caught nothing at all….
We woke to the sound of rocks banging on the boat. Suddenly a faint voice appeared. It was the Messiah teaching people. He then ended his sermons and turned around saying, “Hello fellow fisherman. He then said “Cast that net. I then said “It is your word”. We cast net on the right side. For a few seconds nothing happened. Then… CREAK! BANG! There was so much fish. John and James sprinted toward me. They helped us pull it in. There were so many fish. John and James sprinted towards me. They helped us pull it in. There were so many fish that it filled the whole boat. I then walked up to the Messiah and thanked him. We then went to the market to sell the fish.

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (16: 21-27)
Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself.
Jesus began to make it clear to his disciples that he was destined to go to Jerusalem and suffer grievously at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes, to be put to death and to be raised up on the third day. Then, taking him aside, Peter started to remonstrate with him. ‘Heaven preserve you, Lord,’ he said. ‘This must not happen to you.’ But he turned and said to Peter, ‘Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because the way you think is not God’s way but man’s.’
Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his life will lose it; but anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it. What, then, will a man gain if he wins the whole world and ruins his life? Or what has a man to offer in exchange for his life?
‘For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of his Father with his angels, and, when he does, he will reward each one according to his behaviour.’
This week’s gospel is the first of three predictions of Jesus’ death and resurrection in Matthew’s gospel (see also Mark and Luke). Despite Peter’s confession of faith that immediately precedes this passage (see last week’s gospel), the disciples still do not have a very solid understanding of Jesus’ purpose. They may regard him as the Messiah, but still do not fully understand what that means. In this passage, Jesus is beginning to prepare them for the events of the passion – his death and resurrection. He is trying to lead them to a greater understanding of his mission and message. But Peter abruptly ‘rebukes’ Jesus and tells him not to speak like that. One can almost hear Peter saying, ‘Look, Jesus, you’ve got a good thing going here, don’t spoil it by talking about dying!’ However, Jesus responds to Peter very sharply, suggesting that his lack of understanding is inspired by evil and reflects human thought, not divine wisdom.
The passage then leads in to a description of the challenge of discipleship. To be a follower of Jesus means to ‘deny’ oneself, take up one’s cross and follow Jesus. In the context of this passage, to ‘deny’ oneself means to not be concerned about ‘I’ but to be concerned about ‘You’ – to put others before self. To be a follower of Jesus means to be selfless, not self-centred. In the ultimate example of this, Jesus tells his disciples that whoever wishes to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Jesus’ sake will find it. To ‘save’ your life is to hold back from giving yourself fully to the message of Jesus – to be ‘half-hearted’ in your faith. But to ‘lose’ yourself in the message of Jesus is to fully give yourself over to living the reign of God and through ‘losing’ yourself in this way, Jesus tells us, is how to truly find life.
Historical Context. Whoever
loses his life for my sake...
At the time of the writing of Matthew’s gospel (around 75-80 CE), Christians were being persecuted and put to death for their beliefs. They were literally giving up their lives for their faith. These persecuted Christians saw Jesus’ triumph over death as a sign of great hope and trust in the future for themselves. Jesus’ words in the gospel – ‘whoever loses his life for my sake will find it’ – would give hope to those under persecution that ultimately they too would triumph and that the deaths of their friends were not in vain.
Scriptural context. Not quite
there...
This passage immediately follows the passage of last week’s gospel which featured Peter’s confession of faith – his inspired revelation that ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.’ The reader might think, ‘Aha, the disciples have finally got it!’ But in a very clever piece of writing, the author of Matthew’s gospel follows this revelation of faith immediately with an example of the lack of clarity that the disciples, including Peter, still possess. This happens throughout the gospels. Whenever the disciples have a bit of an insight, they are almost immediately shown to only have a partial understanding of the truth. The full revelation of Jesus’ mission and ministry is not easy to grasp and even the disciples were not quite there until they had seen the ‘full story’ played out before and within them.
Living the Gospel. Have you got what it takes?
For some people, to be a Christian is a ‘soft option’ – they see being Christian as being a bit ‘fluffy’. This week’s gospel is a reminder of the real challenge of being a Christian. Jesus reminds us that to be one of his followers we must be prepared to pick up our cross – whatever our particular cross might be – and still follow his example. To be a Christian means that we don’t fall in a heap when difficulty comes our way; we take up the burden – our cross – and continue to look forward with hope. To live like Jesus is no easy option.
