Term 3 Week 10 of 10
Friday, 19th September 2024
Message From the Principal
Dear Parents/Carers,
This week sees the end of Term Three. What a wonderfully busy term we have had with Grandparents Day celebrations, Parent Teacher Learning Conversations, excursions, incursions, Book Week, Year Level Masses, Camps, Father’s Day Breakfast, Confirmations, Prep to Grade 2 Tabloid Sports and of course ending with our Grade 6 production A Fairy Tale Quest last night!
Confirmation
Last Saturday we held the final of our Parish Confirmations. Bishop Martin Ash spoke to the newly confirmed about how they can take inspiration from the Saints that they have been researching in choosing a confirmation name to take. He shared about St Charles de Foucauld, a French saint who as an adult drifted away from his upbringing and faith.
Eventually, St Charles came to know Jesus in a much deeper way. He became aware it wasn’t enough to just love Jesus but also he needed to follow Jesus by loving everyone regardless of their colour, background, faith, gender. Bishop Martin reminded us that St Charles saw everyone as a brother and sister of the human family and a child of God. Our newly confirmed student’s task now is to show the love of Jesus to the world.
Bishop Martin said that “The Holy Spirit is with us to make a difference (and) you too can make a wonderful difference for good in our world with the gift of the Holy Spirit you now have.”
Please join us in keeping our students and their families in your prayers as they continue their faith journey. My heartfelt thanks to Fr Gerard, Mrs. Aclan (Religious Education Leader) Mrs Rachael Bonavia and Mrs Melanie Apap from our Parish for their exceptional preparation of all our Confirmation candidates. I must also thank the Grade 6 teachers and staff who attended and supported our students during this final Sacrament of Initiation.
Production
Wow! Our Grade 6 students delivered an outstanding performance for our school community on Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Reflecting on these incredible shows, I'm reminded of Oscar Wilde's words:
“I regard the theater as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.”
This sentiment truly shone through in our students’ portrayal of A Fairy Tale Quest. Under the guidance of Miss Jody Banks, our amazing Performing Arts teacher, the Grade 6 students demonstrated remarkable confidence and commitment, fully embodying their characters and delivering a memorable performance. These are invaluable skills that will serve them well beyond the stage as they transition to secondary school. Be sure to check out some live action shots from A Fairy Tale Quest at the back of the newsletter. The full recording of the production will be available early next term.
PJ Day Fundraiser
Last Friday I thought was the most comfiest I have EVER been at school! So many of our staff and students wore their PJs, Oodies, dressing gowns and slippers to school to raise money for Project Ubuntu. I am very pleased to share that we raised a total of $370!
Fr Nestus from Uganda passed on this message
“I received the good news that the school had a fundraising function led by all children. I informed the parishioners about this good news, and all were filled with great joy and happiness. We appreciate greatly the children and the families for the love and generosity to us. These funds will be of great help particularly to our children who are struggling to have an education due to lack of school fees and other education necessities. May God bless you and reward you most abundantly.”
Fr Nestus.
Staffing News
This week Miss Carla Tirotta is on leave as she prepares for her wedding with Daniel! The preps surprised Miss Tirotta last Friday with lots of fun activities such as making wedding dresses in small groups out of toilet paper and crepe paper! They had so much fun, and I think that there may be some future fashion designers in our prep cohort! Miss Tirotta, from all of us at Resurrection, we hope that you enjoy a life filled with love and happiness. May God bless you both.
This week we also wish Mrs Aclan all the best as she prepares to welcome her third baby later this month. Please join us in praying for Erica, her husband Alvin and daughters Tala and Kaiya as they prepare with anticipation for the arrival of their precious new bundle of joy.
Happy Holidays
Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all our families every blessing as the next two weeks provides an opportunity to rest, be together and enjoy family excursions, adventures and activities. Term 4 will begin on Monday 7th of October.

Message from Mr Glasby whilst on the Footsteps of St Paul Pilgrimage in Greece
Hi Everyone,
I’ve learnt a lot about St Paul’s and been to Corinth and the Athens Agora where Paul delivered the message of Jesus and where Christianity began to grow. I got to stand in the exact spot where St Paul addressed the people of Athens, essentially starting the Church!
Following on from Athens and Corinth we have continued our journey of St Paul. We travelled to Philippi. One of the most amazing parts of the journey was visiting the Baptistery of Lydia
where St Paul baptised the first person in Europe who later became St Lydia. We renewed our Baptismal promises in the tranquil place where this moment occurred around 2000 years ago. This was very moving. Later we visited the ruins of the old city of Philippi and I stood where St Paul spoke to the people in the ancient agora. It was this very place where he was taken by the authorities and jailed. We also went to the ruins of this jail.
It was amazing to read St Paul’s letter to the Philippians in the exact place it was spoken and to feel his passion and genuine love for Jesus. He wanted the people of Philippi to come to know this love and share this love with one another with care and sincerity.
Best wishes always,
Principal
Grade 6 Basketball Tournaments
On Friday the 13th of September, the Grade 6 boys basketball team ventured off to Keilor Stadium for a regional basketball tournament. Ten teams arrived ready to play. The boys won their 1st game convincingly against Kings Parks Primary School 25-2. In the 2nd game the boys continued their dominating form, winning 28-1.
The 3rd game proved to be a much tougher affair, going down to the eventual champions, Kororoit Creek Primary School 23-13. The boys were the only team to keep Kororoit Creek to under 30 points and gave them their closest game. In the 4th game, the boys edged out Cairnlea Park Primary School 20-11. The boys finished 4th on the table (out of 10) and qualified for a 3rd place play off against 3rd placed, St Lawrence Catholic Primary School (Derrimut). The boys triumphed 26-15, leaving the tournament as ‘bronze’ medallists, finishing with a 4-1 record.
On Monday the 16th of September, the Grade 6 girls basketball team headed off to Keilor Stadium for a regional basketball tournament. They were one of ten teams and battled against four teams on the day. The girls played against Kings Park Primary School, Derrimut Primary School, Kororoit Creek Primary School (eventual champions) and finally Cairnlea Park Primary School. The girls had a tough schedule and ended up playing against the two top teams of the tournament, Kings Park and Kororoit Creek.
What was amazing was both teams' ability to showcase our school’s PBL values of Respect, Resilience and Responsibility throughout the tournament.
A big thanks goes to Ms Paola, Mrs Aclan and Mr Glasby for organising and preparing both our Grade 6 Basketball teams.
Sincerely,
Basketball coach
SUNDAY GOSPEL
This Sunday’s reading is from the Holy Gospel according to Mark (9: 30 - 37 )
You The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of humanity ... All who wish to be first must make themselves the servants of all.
After leaving the mountain Jesus and his disciples made their way through Galilee; and he did not want anyone to know, because he was instructing his disciples; he was telling them, ‘The Son of Man will be delivered into the hands of men; they will put him to death; and three days after he has been put to death he will rise again.’ But they did not understand what he said and were afraid to ask him.
They came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house he asked them, ‘What were you arguing about on the road?’ They said nothing because they had been arguing which of themwas the greatest. So he sat down, called the Twelve to him and said, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must make himself last of all and servant of all.’ He then took a little child, set him in front of them, put his arms round him, and said to them, ‘Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name, welcomes me; and anyone who welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me.’
Gospel Reflection
Last week’s gospel, in which Jesus asked his disciples, ‘Who do you say I am?’ marked a turning point in the gospel of Mark. Having established in the minds of the disciples that he is indeed the Messiah, Jesus now begins to explore with them what that really means and also what it means to be a follower – a disciple – of the Messiah who must be put to death. Having finally come to some level of understanding that Jesus is the Messiah, the disciples have latched on to a very limited understanding of Jesus’ Messiahship. They have assumed that being Messiah meant that Jesus was going to lead a triumphant victory over all the woes of the Jews – it was a common understanding and expectation of what the Messiah would do. With this in mind, the disciples begin to argue amongst themselves about who will hold positions of respect and power in the aftermath of Jesus’ great triumph. Despite what Jesus had just said about being put to death and rising again, the disciples simply couldn’t grasp what he was saying and fell back onto a familiar picture of the Messiah.
To really shake up the disciples and try to make them pay attention to what he was saying to them, Jesus put his arms around a small child and told the disciples they had to welcome little children in his name. Like so many gospel images there is more going on here than meets the eye. Children were regarded as complete nobodies in the culture of the time. They had no status and absolutely no authority. Jesus is saying to the disciples, don’t argue about who will be the greatest; this child – this nobody – is greater than anyone who lords it over others. If you treat a nobody like this with respect, you treat me with respect.
Historical Context – Messianic expectation
The term Messiah means anointed one. In the era of the Kings of Israel, quite literally someone was designated King by being anointed – having oil poured over their head. It’s easy to see that when the people of Israel spoke about a ‘Messiah’ (an ‘anointed one’) who would restore justice and peace, they had in mind a great King. They even expected that the new king would come from the line of David, the line of the great kings of their history. Jesus was working against centuries of tradition when he tried to get the disciples to see tha the Messiah could be something else.
Scriptural context – Three predictions
This gospel event is the second of three occasions in the gospel of Mark when Jesus clearly makes a prediction about his death and subsequent resurrection. They occur in chapters 8, 9 and 10 of the gospel and all three are associated with the disciples’ lack of understanding about the mission and fate of Jesus. In each case, Jesus could not speak more plainly about what will happen to him and yet the disciples fail to understand. These three chapters have an overarching image of the disciples’ ‘blindness’ to the truth of Jesus’ message.
Have you thought? Last of all?
Jesus tells his disciples that if anyone wants to be first, they must make themself last of all and servant of all. This is as challenging to us today as it was to the disciples and early Christians. Our world seems to revolve around position, status and power – whoever has the most toys wins! But what Jesus advocated was a leadership based on being of service to others. Being powerful simply means you are in a position to help even more people. Putting yourself last, instead of first, gives respect, dignity and power to others rather than to yourself.
Resurrection Maltese Community
Invites everyone to The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Celebrated by Fr Gerard on Sunday 6th October at 10.30am Mass. Mass will begin with the procession of Our Lady and after communion all the children will be invited to process down and place a flower at the statue of Our Lady. After Mass there will be some light lunch for all to share and some traditional dancing.
Jasper is part of the Under 12's Caroline Springs Blue Devils took out the A grade championship in a nail biter against long time rivals Aberfeldie. Down 39 to 40 with 1.1 seconds left, their center was fouled and sunk both foul shots to win 41 to 40. It was an amazing win before his move to Under 14's in the summer season.
Our Prep’s celebrating Miss Tirotta's upcoming wedding!
